Author Joey Green sends The Jolly President to Every U.S. Senator

Today, author Joey Green sent an advance copy of his forthcoming book, The Jolly President (or Letters George W. Bush Never Read), to all one hundred United States Senators—Democrats and Republicans alike—by first-class mail.

Los Angeles (PRWEB) March 26, 2006 -- Today, author Joey Green sent an advance copy of his forthcoming book, The Jolly President (or Letters George W. Bush Never Read), to all one hundred United States Senators—Democrats and Republicans alike—by first-class mail. The senators are expected to receive the book by the first week in April.

The Jolly President, a parody of a children’s book, features pocket pages with a satiric letter, postcard, or greeting card tucked inside—addressed to President George W. Bush, from the likes of Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden, and Dick Cheney. The book follows the adventures of the President as he sleeps his way through his administration, neglecting to read letters that could have changed the world for the better. It’s all done in the wickedly irreverent spirit of Saturday Night Live, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and the old National Lampoon—the humor magazine to which Green was a contributing editor in the early 1980s.

Green sent the book to every U.S. Senator to alert Congress that more than 20 major publishing houses were afraid to publish The Jolly President because of the fear the Bush Administration has apparently instilled in the publishing world. “I just want the Senate to protect our Constitutional right to laugh,” said Green. “I’d also like the President to start reading his mail.”

Although Green has published 34 books with major publishing houses, sold millions of books, and appeared on Tonight Show, Good Morning America, and The View, his past publishers were afraid to touch the politically razor-sharp Jolly President. Undaunted, Green founded Lunatic Press and secured nationwide distribution through Independent Publishers Group. The Jolly President will be available in bookstores across the United States starting April 1, and the controversial book will be prominently displayed in Barnes & Noble stores.

Ironically, the rejection letters Green received from the publishing houses read like back cover blurbs.

One major New York publishing house called it “a hysterical and highly creative masterpiece, which we enjoyed reading immensely. Regretfully, after careful consideration, our editorial board is doubtful that the book could find a large enough audience given its timing.”

An editor from another prominent publisher wrote, “I’m very fond of Joey, and this showcases his terrific sense of humor. I’m afraid, however, that we ran up against two obstacles. The first is that we don’t typically publish this kind of highly produced book because costs are prohibitive and the second is that we’re hearing from our sales force that accounts are showing resistance to political projects, especially those related to Bush.”

Yet another mainstream American publishing company said, “Joey Green’s new idea for The Jolly President is very clever. . . . We’re just not sure this kind of satirical parody will work in today’s political climate.”

“I don’t know why the publishing houses were so afraid to publish this book,” said Green. “President Bush is never going to read it.”

Green also created an animated video of The Jolly President that will be launched on April 1st on the internet. The Jolly President (or Letters George W. Bush Never Read) is available at bookstores everywhere starting April 1 or through the internet at www.lunaticpress.com.
