EPPIE, the longest-standing, most-inclusive e-book awards have announced their 7th annual award winners. Held on March 18th at the historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX, it was a mix of industry posh and Oscar revelry that members traveled from as far as the UK to attend.

From a rolling start of 550 entries in 19 categories, whittled down to 75 finalists by industry judges that include authors, editors and publishers, the winners of the 2006 EPPIE awards have been determined and announced. Twenty lucky books walked away from the EPPIE banquet at EPICon 2006 with the top prize for their categories.

The EPPIE stands as the longest-running and most inclusive e-book award of its kind, an industry standard and much-sought-after accolade for many authors and publishers. Awarded by EPIC, the Electronically Published Internet Connection, this award recognizes a total of 19 fiction and nonfiction categories, spotlighting the best books of the contest year.

Only e-books are welcome to enter the EPPIE, though entries from the NY conglomerates, independent royalty-paying press and self-published authors alike are welcome. In the EPPIE, there are no lines between publishers and self-publishers; only the book is of importance, and the list of finalists and winners stands as a best of the best the industry has to offer.

March 18th, 2006: On the lush backdrop of the historic Menger Hotel in San Antonio, TX, one might assume such an auspicious event would be stuffed shirts and formal attire. While there were indeed dresses worthy of the Oscars, the mood was light and the presenters and emcee for life, Jeff Strand, were in rare form and wit. Authors were seen holding their breath or holding hands with writing partners, waiting for the words, “And this year’s winner is...” all recorded on Podcast for later broadcast for the first time in EPPIE history.
