Perls of Wisdom: brian d foy Brings Perl Bootcamp to the Big Nerd Ranch July 10-14, 2006

Big Nerd Ranch announces Perl Bootcamp with brian d foy July 10-14, 2006. Perl, a powerful and ubiquitous programming language, is an ideal solution for web and application developers and system and database administrators. While plenty of training manuals are available for learning Perl, the Big Nerd Ranch has condensed the learning process into a single week of complete immersion in Perl programming. Students should expect to work hard and return to the world as Perl programmers.

Guiding students to realize the full potential of coding in Perl is guru brian d foy, an expert programmer with over 11 years teaching Perl classes and the co-author of O'Reilly's Learning Perl. Learning Perl will be featured as the primary text in the Perl Bootcamp.

"A lot of people do Perl programming. We want to help people do Perl programming well," said Big Nerd Ranch founder, Aaron Hillegass. "You can play around with the technology yourself, and you'll probably learn it in six weeks. Or you could come to the Big Nerd Ranch and achieve equal mastery in a week."

Perl Bootcamp is a five-day intensive course exploring the underlying structures and advanced features that make Perl an efficient, powerful and flexible development solution. By completion of the course, students will emerge with the ability to write sophisticated Perl applications, use regular expressions to manipulate text data, integrate modules from the CPAN, and access databases with DBI.

The course is broken down into major conceptual themes, highlighting key features of Perl programming, including:

  • Scalars, Lists and Arrays
  • Subroutines and Hashes
  • Basic input and output
  • Regular and advanced regular expressions for character classes, anchoring patterns, and metacharacters
  • Manipulating Files and Directories
  • Database access with DBI

While no prior experience in Perl is necessary, students should have prior experience with some programming language. For a complete syllabus please visit http://www.bignerdranch.com/classes/perl.shtml.

The Big Nerd Ranch incorporates intensive training classes for Unix and Mac OS X programmers in a retreat setting outside Atlanta, GA and in Europe. Class price of $3500 includes lodging, all meals, original instruction materials, 24-hour lab access, and transportation to and from the Atlanta airport. Students are encouraged to bring independent projects to class, allowing for input from classmates and individual instructor attention.
