Palcott Software, a provider of computer security solutions, today published its findings on the sentiment of security issues for business users in the US. One of the findings showed that 52% of surveyed users never change their passwords for web sites and applications, in direct contrast with best practices for security laid out by web sites. Another related finding that may be an indication of why passwords are not changed was that 69% of respondents used different passwords for web sites and applications.
Another growing problem is how users manage all the different passwords, as the survey found that 48% of respondents manually had to write down passwords in either a paper format or in a computer file.
“Not enough attention is placed on user compliance in regards to password and security best practices,” says Eric Constantini, Co-Founder and President of Palcott Software. “The survey clearly shows that businesses are not doing all they can to prevent unauthorized access to web sites and applications. We believe this problem will only continue to grow as more and more business is conducted online.”
“It’s not enough to tell users what the best security procedures are if many of them do not implement them. What users need is a simple way to secure their sensitive data, thus increasing the likelihood that they will actually comply.”
The survey was conducted online with US businesses in February 2006 from a total of 70 small, medium and large businesses. The breakdown included 52% Small Office Home Office (SOHO), 25% with five to twenty-five employees, and 25% with more than fifty employees.
