Jacksonville, FL (PRWEB) March 31, 2006 -- With the incidences of diabetes on the rise, diabetic ulcers are one of the most common chronic foot wounds treated at Diversified Therapy’s 80 hospital-based wound care centers across the country. Diversified Therapy offers tips for good foot health and foot care for April’s National Foot Health Awareness Month. Diversified Therapy recommends diabetics:

  • Inspect feet daily
  • Avoid over-the-counter products to treat your feet
  • Trim your toenails straight across only
  • Avoid cutting on your ulcers or calluses yourself
  • Wear shoes that protect your ulcer and do not cause rubbing or pressure
  • Wear off-loading shoes, boots or casts, as directed by your doctor, to assist in healing your ulcer
  • Dress your ulcer as prescribed by your physician
  • Notify your physician if the ulcer becomes red or develops drainage, swelling or warmth to the area, or if you develop a temperature over 101 degrees F
  • These tips and more information about wound care can be found on our website www.diversifiedtherapy.com

“Diabetes is becoming an insidious health problem,” explained Diversified Therapy President and CEO James Henry. “It’s estimated there are 82,000 amputations annually for diabetics with wounds. Prompt and aggressive treatment of diabetic ulcers can often save a limb.”

Diabetic ulcers are wounds that occur on the foot, heel or toe of people with diabetes. Many times there is little to no feeling in the feet or the ulcer itself. A pulse is present and the skin is normal or warm to the touch. Diabetics should consult their physician if they suspect they may have a diabetic ulcer. If a wound has not started to heal in two weeks or completely healed in six weeks, the patient may benefit from a specialized wound care center.

Diversified Therapy centers offer new technologies and treatments for chronic wounds. These treatments include specialized wound care, wound tracking technology and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). With centers located in 27 states and 80 hospitals nationwide, Diversified Therapy is a leader in wound care and disease prevention.
