Not tonight dear, I have (arthritis, joint pain, heartburn, obesity ...)
A 2000 Newsweek poll reported that 50% of women and 40% of men have problems with sex at some time. Many of these problems are medical, psychological (or a headache), but many of are probably due to orthopedic conditions and/or obesity, heartburn and other conditions that may cause sexual activities on a bed to be frustrating, uncomfortable and even painful.
APRIL 19, 2006 -- A 2000 Newsweek poll reported that 50% of women and 40% of men have problems with sex at some time. Many of these problems are medical, psychological (or a headache), but many of are probably due to orthopedic conditions and/or obesity, heartburn and other conditions that may cause sexual activities on a bed to be frustrating, uncomfortable and even painful.
Why the bed is so limiting? Just think of the physical pressures and stress one puts on one’s joints when making love on a flat surface. It is not surprising that pain may flair up in areas already tender from osteoarthritis or trauma. If heartburn (gastro acid reflux) is present It’s most painful when lying down and can be worsened by the jostling of bodies when in the prone position. If one or both partners are overweight the “bottom” person may have difficulty bearing the weight of the “top” person and extra flesh may make satisfactory penetration problematic. Women in the final few months of pregnancy seek positions that minimize the pressure upon their burgeoning bellies to avoid discomfort and out of concern for the fetus, and still allow for satisfactory sex. The positioning issue is further compounded for the 25% of pregnant women who suffer from daily heartburn symptoms. Many men who use Viagra or other therapies for Erectile Dysfunction find that when they are lying down, blood from their erections may flow back into their torsos. People with hip or knee joint replacements may worry about the pressures and strains on their prosthetics during bed-sex.
And millions of aging adults may not be diagnosed with specific clinical conditions, but still find that traditional sexual activity on a bed is not as comfortable or pain free as in the past. In particular, this may apply to those who may have been sexually inactive for months or years, but with Viagra-like products are once again sexually active.
Several companies have developed products for positioning bodies for intimate activities. However only the HarmonySystem was invented specifically to help couples with limiting conditions as listed above.
The HarmonySystem was evaluated by a team of eminent clinicians, with Dr. Abraham Morgentaler, Associate Professor of Urology, at the Harvard Medical School, as the principal investigator. (Seven couples with orthopedic and obesity conditions completed a sexual satisfaction survey before and after using the HarmonySystem for four weeks). Dr. Morgentaler presented their findings at the Annual meeting of the Sexual Medicine Society a Division of the American Urological Society, and The Journal of Sexual Medicine recently published an abstract. Principal findings were: “Use of the HarmonySystem increased overall sexual satisfaction from 26% to 64%. Pleasure with intercourse was rated as Very Satisfactory or Satisfactory by 64% before the HarmonySystem and in 93% of subjects afterwards. Acceptable vaginal penetration was noted by 63% of subjects before the HarmonySystem compared with 93% with it. No limitation of sexual activity due to their medical condition was noted 50% of the time without the apparatus, and in 64% with it. Improvement in the sexual experience with the HarmonySystem was noted in 14/14 individuals, and all responded that they would recommend the HarmonySystem to others with the same physical conditions.
Richard Harris, inventor of the HarmonySystem and the President of Compass Institute states: “We are very pleased to have the anecdotal reports of sexual improvement that we have received from customers be confirmed by these eminent clinicians. We will continue to evaluate the benefits provided by the product for couples with many other conditions so that the medical community will have a product to recommend and intimate couples will have a product to buy.”
