Eight innovative companies that are significantly improving the way healthcare is delivered will be honored at the Eighth Annual Innovations in HealthcareSM Awards and Event, presented by the Adaptive Business Leaders (ABL) Organization, on June 7, 2006 in Long Beach, California. Four of these honorees will also be chosen to receive ABBY Awards.

At the event, ABL will also present its 2006 “Leadership in Innovation” Award to Ken Kizer, MD, a pioneering advocate of information technology (IT) as an enabler for improving healthcare safety and quality. As Under Secretary for Health in the Veteran’s Administration (VA), from 1994 to 1999, Ken is widely credited with being the chief architect and engineer of the VA's remarkable transformation, including VistA, a system-wide implementation of an electronic health record, bar code medication administration, and other IT innovations, years before the healthcare industry embraced the importance of IT. Today, Ken is Chairman and CEO of Medsphere, a leading commercial provider of open source technology for the healthcare industry, which is delivering commercially supported software based on VistA.

The eight ABBY Award Finalists to be showcased at Innovations in HealthcareSM were selected by a committee of 19 ABL Member/industry leaders who convened by video-conference in both Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Finalists were selected from among 35 organizations nominated for their innovative medical products, systems, processes and services designed to improve healthcare outcomes, while providing the timely delivery of quality, cost-effective healthcare. At the conclusion of the June 7th event, following presentations by the eight Finalists, attendees’ votes will decide which four companies – one from each of four separate categories – will take home ABBY Awards.
