After almost losing a deal to a Spanish-speaking competitor, Urban Advocate Charles Butch Grimes took the challenge as a wake-up call for himself and the community he supports. Grimes, a real estate broker and CEO of We TalkEnterprises created a new type of language learning program: Occupation and Industry Specific Adult language classes in Spanish.

In a community where “bilingual preferred” leads most employment classified ads, there is still a lack of formal and accessible training programs for non-Spanish speaking Urban adults. Grimes, an African-American, challenged his 17 real estate agents and staff to take on communication with almost 50% of their potential customer base. According to the U.S. Census, the minority community is actually the majority in Los Angeles County, where Grimes has served as past president of the California Association of Real Estate Brokers.

The county’s Hispanic and Latino population now stands at 44.6% and with the African Americans comprising 9.8% of the total pool, the once “minority” population is the new majority in L.A. county. These Urban citizens also lead the way into a new paradigm for the businesses in the county, not enough people speak Spanish. “One day it may be the dominant language of the people,” states Grimes. With that challenge in mind, We TalkEspanol was born and class begins on Thursday, April 6th.

“It’s time that we take responsibility for communicating with our fellow Urban citizens,” states Grimes. “The Spanish speaking communities are our neighbors, our customers, our service providers. We meet them at the Team Equity LA office in Inglewood, CA, in the banks and the grocery stores. We TalkEspanol is an immersion program in the language we use everyday in business. Industry specific classes are designed around the jargon of each trade, be it medical, legal, real estate or banking. Each industry has its own rhythm and code and if you’re in that business, the sale goes to the person who can communicate the best,” concludes Grimes.
