Websense, Inc. (NASDAQ: WBSN), a global leader in web security and web filtering software, today announced the establishment of its Websense® Wireless division to optimize and protect the mobile Internet environment. Subscribers and carriers can now benefit from the same level of award-winning protection Websense provides to over 24,000 customers worldwide. Websense ensures safe web surfing by managing access to inappropriate websites and preventing access to sites with security threats such as Trojan horses, keyloggers and phishing scams.

3G network rollouts have significantly increased the number of handsets featuring high-bandwidth Internet access. Coupled with the larger screens and greater processing power of these handsets, subscribers can now do many of the same online activities with their data-enabled phones that they do with their PCs. Handheld Internet access is vulnerable to the same issues as PC-based web surfing -- unfettered access to adult websites and web-borne security threats. Access to undesirable content on the web is of paramount concern to parents buying next-generation phones for their children.

Mobile handsets are also security targets, with more than 150 viruses reported in less than two years. And the problem is growing exponentially as penetration of data-enabled handsets increases. There is also a proliferation of websites to support handheld offerings, such as ringtones, images and music files which may become vulnerable to hackers’ malicious code.

Websense is working with wireless network equipment manufacturers, including Nortel Networks, and wireless solution providers to deliver to carriers a simple and powerful service to ensure subscribers and their families can enjoy the benefits of mobile Internet access without the drawbacks of unfettered surfing. This service is a competitive advantage to carriers and an innovative source of revenue that will increase carriers’ average revenue per user (ARPU).

The company has also dedicated resources to its wireless initiative with the appointment of Kian Saneii to the new role of General Manager, Websense Wireless, and the formation of a team focused solely on wireless opportunities worldwide.

“We have established a proven leadership position in the IT market by delivering the best-of-breed Internet management experience to our worldwide customer base,” said Kian Saneii, general manager, Websense Wireless. “Websense Wireless leverages our proven web filtering and web security technologies to increase subscriber ARPU, improve the subscriber experience, address compliance requirements, as well as mitigate mobile security threats.”

The Websense solution is based on the company’s award-winning database of more than 15 million unique URLs. Carriers can leverage Websense such that when a subscriber requests a website on their mobile handset, that request is checked against the Websense database to ensure that access to the website is deemed appropriate for that subscriber and is also free of security risks. If the site is outside of what is considered acceptable or poses a security threat, access to the site will be blocked and a block message will appear on the screen.

The Websense solution provides carriers with a number of unique and critical wireless-centric features, including native support of WML and WAP, the telco-grade scalability of the Websense policy engine, the most accurate URL database, patented WebCatcher technologies, native and integrated support for over 60 additional protocols, including instant messaging, peer-to-peer, voice-over-IP (including Skype), and streaming media.
