Prominent theologians consider Azusa Street, “the birthplace of the modern Pentecostal movement.” Today, more than 600 million adherents to the tenets of Pentecostalism can trace their religious roots back to the Azusa Street Revival, which began on April 9, 1906.

According to Vinson Synan, author of The Century of the Holy Spirit, the Azusa Street Revival began at 214 Bonnie Brae Street, where on April 9, 1906, “Pentecost first fell in Los Angeles when several persons spoke in tongues…the phenomenon of tongues and the dynamic message was so exciting that crowds gathered in the street in front of the house to hear Elder (William) Seymour preach from the homemade pulpit on the front porch.” Synan goes on to explain that because of the crowds the meetings soon had to move to a larger space a few blocks away in an abandoned two-story warehouse and former stable. It was from this meeting place –the Azusa Street Mission – that the Pentecostal movement spread, eventually giving birth to such worldwide denominations as the Church of God in Christ, Assemblies of God and the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel.

“As it was at Azusa Street, personalities will fade into insignificance as all glory is given to God,” stated Rev. Billy Wilson, Centennial executive officer. “This will be a time of unparalleled blessing, ministry and renewal that we hope will be the launching pad into an even greater second century of Pentecostal revival.”
