The awards were established by Mary Foley, a former AOL insider who discovered in her ascent from $8 an hour customer service representative to the company’s first head of corporate training for 12,000 that she needed to shed her self-inhibiting “good girl” and become a “bodacious woman.” “Being bodacious,” she says “is having the courage to be in charge of your life.”
Katie Couric’s decision puts her in the running as a 2006 award recipient. Foley, also author of “Bodacious! Woman: Outrageously in Charge of Your Life and Lovin’ It!”, winner of an honorable mention as “One of the 10 Best Outstanding Books of the Year in 2005” by the Independent Publishers Association, says she wants to America to decide.
“For some, Katie Couric’s decision is just silly and brainless. How can ‘America’s Sweetheart’ with a big smile and great legs be taken seriously enough to deliver often negative news stories night after night? For others, it shows Katie’s bodacious gustiness. She’s woman who may be risking it all to take on a historic opportunity. I believe the results of the poll will indicate if we’re really ready to allow women to shed their ‘good girl’ and become truly empowered, bodacious women who take risks we don’t always understand or agree with.”
Foley will be sharing the initial poll results on Monday, April 10th when she’ll appear on the WSPA-FM Magic 98.9 Bo Griffin Show at 7:30 am Eastern. Similar to Couric’s history making move, Bo Griffin became the first female morning show host of a major-market station. Almost overnight, she put WPOW FM, Miami in first place. For ten years, she reigned as one of Miami’s leading radio personalities.
