The Boston Tamil Center (BTC) was inaugurated on Wednesday April 5, 7:30 PM with a traditional event known as the "Milk boiling Ceremony" or "Paal Kaachal". Mr. Gajendrakumar G. Ponnambalam, (TNA, Sri Lanka Member of Parliament), and several Boston Tamil families were present at this event. The Chairman of BTC, Dr. Thiagalingam, delivered the inaugural speech welcoming the participants.

The BTC will be the first of its kind in the United States of America, established by the expatriate Sri Lankan community to serve as a cultural center and a gathering ground for future Tamil generations in New England and beyond. The BTC will also be a resource center with educational tools for children and a meeting place for all in the Boston Tamil Community. In addition to working towards children's success in meeting the challenges of today, there will be an additional goal to become an organization of philanthropy.

Following an update on the current situation in Northeast Sri Lanka, Mr. G. G. Ponnambalam commented that the creation of the Boston Tamil Center, Inc. is one of its kinds in the Western World and presents unique opportunity to the expatriate Sri Lankan Tamil community. He further went on to say that he hoped other Sri Lankan Tamil Associations would use this as a model to found such centers, to foster and promote the nucleation of Sri Lankan Tamils.
