Foremost design and innovation firm and leading structural design firm come together to provide clients with holistic service.

laga, a design and innovation partner to the world’s leading companies, announces the acquisition of One80 Design, a New York City-based product and package structure innovation and design firm. The acquisition, a first for laga which was founded in 1946, culminates a year-long selection process. The laga-One80 Design partnership results in the only firm offering holistic services from strategic brand design and innovation, to product and package design and in-store solutions, which create financial impact for clients primarily in the consumer packaged goods and durables sectors.

The agreement significantly strengthens both firms as progressive companies continue to recognize that good design is good business, and critical to successful marketing. One80 Design specializes in product and package structure solutions for such icon brands as 3M, Coffee-mate and Gillette, and has earned a stellar reputation for innovation that captivates consumers in the store and delights them in-use. Its managing partners include Jim Warner, the creative force for all concept development, design and implementation efforts; and, Ken Miller, who leads the process, strategy and research that serve as the core of One80 Design’s strategy work.

laga is a design and innovation firm that leads highly collaborative projects in global initiatives through its teams in Chicago, Cincinnati, and New York, and its alliance with 15 of the world’s top design firms: the International Design Partnership®. laga is already an industry leader in designing brands and packaging solutions. Through the acquisition, laga bolsters its product, package, and structure capabilities and both firms will be able to deliver the full range of strategic consulting and 2D and 3D design.

“Acquiring such a talented group in New York is tremendously exciting, and promises outstanding results in holistic design solutions for our current and future clients,” said Jim Barrett, chief executive officer of laga. “The merger of One80 Design’s wealth of knowledge in industrial design with our existing expertise really puts the pieces together, and will bring new dynamism to the increasingly important area of design performance.”

Based on the strength of the firm’s own brand equity, One80 Design will retain its name for the foreseeable future. Its founders, Jim Warner and Ken Miller, will continue to head up operations and laga’s industrial designers will move into the group. The two firms already share business, and laga recently relocated its New York office to One80 Design’s space at 555 8th Avenue in Manhattan.

“The unique integration of multi-disciplinary talent with a global frame-of-reference is the key ingredient to drive creative inspiration, on-target deliverables and seamless implementation, as we set-out to redefine the culture and client-value of a full-service design organization,” said Warner.

“We are thrilled to be joining forces with such a renowned and respected organization as laga,” said Miller. “Together, we are prepared to offer the unique, comprehensive and impactful approaches to innovation and design that clients are demanding.”

Of the deciding factors in acquiring One80 Design, Barrett explained that he was impressed with the firm’s exceptional industrial design competence, shared customer base, and total focus on creating financial impact for its clients. “We share amazing synergies across the board that made One80 Design a real cultural fit with laga.”

The One80 Design acquisition is part of Barrett’s commitment to aggressively grow laga organically, and he plans more strategic acquisitions in the future. “This industry is ripe to bring together complementary design talent that offers robust solutions to clients.”
