CableMatrix Technologies, a leading provider of Quality of Service (QoS) policy management solutions, is demonstrating its Smart Agent technology using a Slingbox from Sling Media in the CableNet area (Booth 3665) of the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) Convention in Atlanta. Using CableMatrix’s unique Smart Agent technology, the solution shows how operators can enhance all streaming media emanating from the popular Slingbox, optimizing the viewing experience of the remote user.
CableMatrix’s PacketCable™ Multimedia (PCMM)-based policy management platform allows operators to readily implement real-time QoS and bandwidth management. Their solution suite consists of their carrier-class ODSPTM (On Demand Service Platform) policy server, along with an array of innovative application managers designed to dramatically simplify application integration. The Slingbox application takes advantage of CableMatrix’s patent-pending “Smart Agents” --- software modules that remotely signal for specific bandwidth, latency, and jitter parameters on behalf of authenticated end users.
“Roaming capabilities will be an important factor for next generation service providers,” said Matt Tooley, CTO of CableMatrix, citing remote PC access and commercial network connectivity as related applications. “Our Slingbox demonstration shows how operators can differentiate their offerings and extend their reach, even when subscribers are not on their home networks.”
The Slingbox is a breakthrough consumer electronics product that allows consumers to watch their living room TV programming from wherever they are by turning virtually any Internet-connected Windows-based laptop, desktop or Windows Mobile-based device into a personal TV. The Slingbox redirects, or "placeshifts," a single live TV stream from a cable box to the remote viewer's display. Sling Media’s existing software solution adapts to wide variations in the end-to-end network. CableMatrix’s Smart Agent enhances the remote viewing experience by making additional upstream bandwidth on the source network available when authenticated by the operator.
“We’ve been confident from the beginning that the Slingbox has the ability to directly impact all levels of the value chain, creating tremendous opportunities for partners willing to work with us,” said Blake Krikorian, Sling Media co-founder and CEO. “The CableMatrix solution enhances the overall Slingbox experience in a way that our customers will definitely appreciate.”
CableMatrix provides IMS compatible software solutions that enable broadband operators to maximize their revenues while delivering media-rich IP applications and services. Its standards-compliant ODSP Policy Server, in conjunction with the XAM Application Manager, enables dynamic QoS and bandwidth management on a per-customer, per-application basis, giving broadband cable operators the ability to directly link increased bandwidth usage with increased revenue.
