19-year-old magician Matthew Versteeg of Naples, FL trumped seasoned marketers to win “Outstanding Business Card Marketer for 2006.” Versteeg won the award based on the “Direct Response” style of the business card and his innovative networking strategies.

According to Diana Ratliff, President of, who awarded the title, Versteeg’s business card strategy exemplified not only sound business card design but effective advertising. “Many business card awards are based on how the card looks,” according to Ratliff, “but I feel that the true test of a business card’s worth is how effective it is in helping someone promote his or her business. So this award is focused not just on the business card; equally important is how well someone uses a business card as a marketing tool.”

Versteeg’s business card is two-sided. On the front is his photo, a benefit-laden headline, his name, title, and phone number. The back side offers a free report which can be obtained by calling a recorded message. Since Versteeg caters to two different types of customers, he has two business cards, with the headline and free report tailored to each.

Ratliff, who subsequently interviewed Versteeg via phone, was impressed by more than just his card. “You don’t see many direct response business cards, so that immediately attracted my attention. Offering free reports is a savvy way to provide additional information to his prospects without pressuring them. And his decision to offer two different cards sets him apart from the vast majority of business card users. But I was also impressed by his approach to handing out business cards.”

Versteeg’s style is to attract prospects rather than chase them, and he employs creative strategies to encourage other people to approach him and ask what he does.

“I see thousands of business cards annually,” said Ratliff, who is also the author of “Business Card Breakthroughs.” “Versteeg’s business card strategy sets him apart. The fact that he has such a sound grasp of marketing at his young age makes him especially notable. There was really no other choice for our first ‘Outstanding Business Card Marketer’ award.”
