Health Products Provider Discovers Ginkgo Biloba Supplements Fail Independent Lab Testing

Ginkgo Biloba substitute being sold as Natural Ginkgo health products. Supplements rejected by Our Health Co-op after company discovers independent laboratory test results.

Our members count on us not only to negotiate good prices on their behalf, but also to give them the straight scoop and science behind our decisions, including our decision to reject the failed batch of our Ginkgo Biloba and have empty shelves temporarily.

Our Health Co-op, provider of highly-affordable health products, recently rejected a new production run of its Ginkgo Biloba, an herbal supplement used by seniors for both cognitive and vascular health. Without notice, a long-term supplier switched raw materials from natural ginkgo to a ginkgo substitute, which did not pass independent laboratory testing.

The company which specializes in serving those with limited means, particularly health-conscious seniors, conferred with two separate U.S. Laboratories. Our Health Co-op verified that the ginkgo substitute, while passing on label claims of 24 percent ginkgoflavone glycosides, scored “zero” for the expected 6 percent of terpene lactones, an essential active ingredient in ginkgo products.

Lab chemists shared that this was a new and disturbing trend with ginkgo products being tested, since terpene lactones, also known as ginkgolides and bilobalide, are the active agents in ginkgo associated with increasing circulation to the brain and other parts of the body.

Stephen Fason, Chief Operating Officer, stated, “A hallmark of our quality program is that we test every production run. Previous tests on ginkgo from the same supplier have been right on, so the ‘fail’ came as a big surprise.”

Fason added, “Our members count on us not only to negotiate good prices on their behalf, but also to give them the straight scoop and science behind our decisions, including our decision to reject the failed batch of our Ginkgo Biloba and have empty shelves temporarily.”

Cindy Marteney, CEO, said, “It is unfortunate. Many people assume our prices are too low to signify quality, which couldn’t be further from the truth. We invest heavily in testing and no one in our company ever challenges testing as too costly.” Marteney added, “Testing is really good insurance in an industry with complex supply chains that span the globe.”

Our Health Co-op eliminates typical industry overhead by eliminating middlemen, selling health products directly to consumers and encouraging members to buy online. By selling directly to consumers, the company is able to pass along extraordinary savings, while maintaining top-quality supplements.
