Company Will Accept Limited Number of Beta Users for Service That Automatically Backs Up PCs over the Internet for $5 per Month.

Carbonite, Inc., the only provider of inexpensive, “set and forget” online PC backup services to consumers, is opening its public beta to 1,000 additional users on a first-come, first-served basis through the end of April, when the product is scheduled to go on sale through major retailers and other channels. Setting a new standard for price and ease of use, Carbonite’s Online PC Backup provides unlimited storage for $5 per month. Carbonite automatically backs up all the data on the user’s PC, easing the worries about data lost to hard drive crashes, theft, viruses, and other threats. Beta users will be entitled to use the service for free through June. In order to protect its users’ data privacy, all files are encrypted before they leave users’ PCs.

Carbonite is completely automatic: Once installed, Carbonite finds any new data and automatically backs it up. It works continuously in the background whenever the user is connected to the Internet, but never slows down the user’s PC or Internet connection.

Beta Program Invitation

Those interested in joining the program may request an invitation at http://www.carbonite.com/beta. The Company will use beta testers’ feedback to fine-tune its program prior to the launch of its flagship Online PC Backup service in early May. This service will back up all data (office documents, photos, music, etc.) on a customer’s PC and will be priced at $5 per month (or $49.95/year) with no pre-determined storage limit. Customers can also earn money or free months of Carbonite service by referring friends and family to Carbonite.

Carbonite’s Flagship Service Will Solve Critical Problem for Consumers

According to Carbonite CEO David Friend, “We’ve found through our research that that only 3 % of consumer PCs are backed up regularly. Just about everyone seems to have a horror story of lost family pictures, important business information, term papers, music libraries, and so forth. We found that many people do partial backups onto CDs from time to time, but most people put it off because ‘it’s a pain in the neck.’ Then someone spills coffee on their laptop and it’s too late. Nobody likes doing backups. That’s why we made Carbonite completely automatic. You set it and forget it – you never have to think about it. And it’s less than a quarter of the price of any other online backup service in the market. Carbonite is for people who want safe, offsite backup of all their data. And it’s only $5 per month for an unlimited amount of backup. There is no simpler or less expensive way to automatically protect your data.”

About Carbonite

Carbonite was founded in 2005 in order to provide Internet-based Backup for Everyone™. Although data loss is a very common problem, few people backup their PCs. Burning CDs is tedious and error-prone. Outboard hard drives are expensive, complicated, and vulnerable to theft, fire, and viruses. Business-oriented online backup services are too complex and expensive for consumers. Carbonite is dedicated to simple, inexpensive, automatic PC backup over the Internet.

At Carbonite, we believe PC users shouldn’t have to think about backup. Our mission is to provide an inexpensive, reliable and truly easy-to-use solution for the mainstream PC user; one that is simple, safe and always on™.
