Codegeist Winners Announced, Atlassian Users Rejoice

The first Atlassian "Codegeist" plugin competition was a fantastic success. Over 31 new plugins were added to the Atlassian Plugin Library, demonstrating the extensibility of the JIRA and Confluence platforms and extending the capabilities of both applications. Contestants had eight weeks to develop, document and submit a previously unreleased plugin for JIRA or Confluence. With $10,000 in cash prizes and heaps of free software licenses (contributed by Codegeist sponsors including Cenqua, Intellij, Mindreef, The ServerSide, Sourcebeat, and YourKit) at stake, the competition was fierce.

Sydney, Australia (PRWEB) April 13, 2006 -- Atlassian Software Systems today announced the winners of the first "Codegeist" plugin competition. Contestants had eight weeks to develop, document and submit a previously unreleased plugin for JIRA or Confluence. Over 31 fantastic plugins were entered as a result of the competition, demonstrating the extensibility of the Atlassian JIRA and Confluence platforms and extending the capabilities of both applications. The plugins are free for Atlassian customers.

"I couldn't be happier with the quality of the work or the number of submissions we received for our first competition," said Jonathan Nolen, Atlassian's director of developer relations. "There is some very impressive work in the collection of new plugins that we received. It demonstrates the enormous creativity of our users and directly benefits our customers."

First prize went to Dan Hardiker of Adaptivist for his contribution of a Confluence Repository Plugin. Once installed, a Confluence Administrator can automatically download, install and upgrade the plugins in the Plugin Library. The repository will generate a list of all the plugins that are compatible with the current version of Confluence and available for download. It will also highlight the ones a company has already installed, and point out the ones that need to be upgraded.

The Confluence Repository Plugin deserves top honors for three reasons. First, it's a substantial piece of work, tackling a complex problem and solving it thoroughly. Second, it was well written, well designed and well documented. And third, the plugin will ultimately benefit every plugin author in the community by helping their plugins to be more widely known and more easily used.

Honorable mention went to Aron Gombas of Midori for Conflickr, and to Andy Armstrong of Pantero for a Metadata Plugin. The Conflickr Plugin gives you full access to Flickr API. One can display photos, sets, groups, users and tags in Confluence. The Metadata Plugin allows users to assign arbitrary metadata to any page in Confluence and then generate reports based on those values. One can also search on them and even manipulate them via the remote API.

Best Hack was awarded to Andre Leupke for the Exec Plugin. Installing the Exec Plugin will let users execute Unix scripts on the host system from inside a Confluence page. It is incredibly useful for things like showing system stats or CVS history.

The winners will split $10,000.00 prize money and receive other great prizes contributed by Codegeist sponsors including Cenqua, Intellij, Mindreef, The ServerSide, Sourcebeat, and YourKit. A complete list of winners, entrants, plugins, prizes, and sponsors is available online at http://www.atlassian.com/c/PR/11193/winners.

Judging was carried out by the Atlassian Development team. They evaluated each plugin on its usefulness, creativity, completeness, and quality. The judges also considered the new functionality that each plugin offered, examined how well the plugin was written, and reviewed the comprehensiveness of the plugin documentation.

JIRA, the professional issue tracking system, and Confluence, the enterprise wiki, are J2EE applications built with an open architecture that enable developers to easily write plugins to enhance the applications' functionality. Anyone can join the Atlassian Developer Network, download public plugin development kits, find coding collaborators, and participate in Developer Forums. For more information on the Developer Network, or to see all the current plugins for JIRA or Confluence, visit http://www.atlassian.com/c/PR/11194/devnet.
