QSI Corporation, manufacturer of operator interface and mobile data terminals, has been selected by Independent Witness™, Inc., developers of black box technology for fleet vehicles, to provide the graphic mobile data terminal (MDT) for their WaySmart® fleet management system. This driver and fleet management system brings improved driver safety and asset utilization to fleet managers at a fraction of the cost of other solutions.

As part of Independent Witness’ WaySmart system, QSI’s VTERM-G55 mobile data terminal displays data from the vehicle’s black box and acts like a coach or mentor to change driving behavior. It alerts the driver when he speeds, turns aggressively, brakes dangerously or does not buckle up. The VTERM-G55 can also display and transmit text messages via the cellular or satellite capability of the WaySmart system.

"We want to take drivers that are at risk in a fleet and change their behavior from an at-risk driver to a preferred driver,” said Luther Perkins, President of Independent Witness, Inc. “The VTERM-G55 adds a rugged and highly functional driver interface to our system."

“Working with Independent Witness is a tremendous opportunity for QSI,” says Tyler Phillips, Vehicle Product Manager for QSI Corporation. “Once again, our experience and expertise in manufacturing and deploying rugged, yet economical, mobile data terminals is proving itself in a highly competitive and demanding market.”

The VTERM-G55 is a rugged MDT using graphics and a keypad to interface with the user. The terminal can be equipped with two EIA-232, -422 or -485 serial ports and/or an Ethernet 10Base-T interface. The VTERM-G55 has a 320x240 pixel, color LCD display measuring 96 mm (3.8") diagonal. (optional grayscale display available) and is viewable in most lighting conditions. Other industrial-grade features include 24-key or 40-key membrane / steel snap dome keypad with LEDs; 2 Mbytes flash / 16 Mbytes SDRAM; programmable speaker and real-time clock. The VTERM-G55 in-vehicle terminal is ruggedized to withstand the shock, vibration, temperature and humidity environmental extremes common in many vehicle-related applications today.

The VTERM-G55 in-vehicle terminal uses an object-based graphic terminal programming language called Qlarity™ (pronounced Clarity). Designing a simple control panel interface or a complete stand-alone application has never been easier. The ability to use pre-defined objects, edit existing objects or author your own objects provides flexibility to the novice and expert alike. Qlarity Foundry™, a PC-based design tool, provides a Windows® environment for screen creation, application simulation, debugging and downloading to the VTERM-G55.
