Mesa, AZ (PRWEB) April 16, 2006 -- The folks at Pima Medical Institute, 957 S. Dobson Road in Mesa put their “soles” into the fight against lung disease when more than 60 students, faculty and staff donated their time, energy and expertise to raise more than $5,000 in funds for the American Lung Association’s Asthma Walk on April 8.

Additional efforts by the career college included free body massages for volunteers performed by PMI’s Massage Therapy students. Respiratory Therapy student, Mike Burk designed a special T-shirt with the Pima Medical Institute logo to unify the career college’s efforts. Additional fundraising prior to the walk included a bake sale, as well as a root beer float campaign to drum up more volunteers.

Proceeds from the Asthma Walk go toward residential summer camp for children with asthma. The special camp provides counselors and volunteers in each cabin to assist with medication, administration, asthma assessments, and ongoing asthma education so the children can fully enjoy their camp experience.

“This event is more than an educational experience, it provides our students with the opportunity to volunteer in the community they will be serving when they graduate,” said Anna Marie Heywood, captain of PMI’s Asthma Walk for the medical institute. “Working in the healthcare field is more than earning a paycheck, it’s about giving back to the community. Participating in the Asthma Walk helps give the students first-hand exposure to the issues facing individuals with asthma, as well as helping our students become more compassionate men and women”.

PMI is one of the premier medical career colleges in the western United States.
