Manhattan Young Democrats Bringing Out Elected Officials for Meet and Greet This Wednesday
City Council Members Jessica Lappin and Dan Garodnick will be in attendance.
New York, NY (PRWEB) April 15, 2006 -- On Wednesday, April 19, at 7pm, elected City Council Members Jessica Lappin and Dan Garodnick will be attending a Social at Link Bar, located on 15th Street and Irving Place. The event is sponsored by the Manhattan Young Democrats (MYD), a youth organization focused on bringing together young Democrats from around Manhattan to educate, motivate, and mobilize them on a number of political issues. The goal of the event is to give Manhattan Democrats the chance to meet and greet their local elected officials, in addition to raising money for the MYD “Train For Change” Workshop slated for mid-August. The workshop will be a one day event aimed at training volunteers for the upcoming midterm elections in November. The Social on April 19th will begin at 7pm, and there will be a $5 donation asked of MYD Members, and a $10 donation asked of Non-Members upon entry.
About the City Council Members
City Council Member Jessica Lappin was elected to the City Council in November 2005. Council Member Lappin represents the 5th District of Manhattan, which includes the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island. She is Chair of the Land Use Subcommittee on Landmarks, Public Siting and Maritime Uses. As her website states, “Praised by the New York Times for her "steely resolve, dedication and energy," Lappin is recognized as a strong advocate for education reform, affordable housing, and equal rights for all New Yorkers.”
A native of Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village on Manhattan’s East Side, City Council Member Dan Garodnick seeks to serve his community in the New York City Council. He is a co-founder of the Market Rate Residents Network in Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town which is focused on addressing the concerns of new tenants, and supporting the work of the existing Tenants Association. Dan also served as president of the Samuel J. Tilden Democratic Club, where he fought to protect rent stabilization and to resist MTA fare hikes without full transparency in their budgets. Dan Garodnick is currently a litigator at the New York law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison LLP. He represented the Partnership for New York City in the successful Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit seeking higher standards and equitable funding for public school students. Additionally, he represented a family that lost a member in the attack of September 11, 2001.
About the Manhattan Young Democrats
The Manhattan Young Democrats is a chapter under the New York State Young Democrats, the official Youth Arm of the New York State Democratic Party. The Young Democrats, which represents Democrats from ages 16 to 36, currently operates in over 30 counties and counts over 15,000 young democrats statewide.
Our mission is to incorporate young people into the Democratic Party.
