Eco-Entrepreneur Urges Individuals to Recycle for Earth Day

Russ Cohn, a San Francisco-based entrepreneur and inventor, speaks about the impact that recycling has on global warming. Cohn himself has developed the only computerized composter in the United States market. His machine is able to divert two tons of waste from landfills over the course of its lifetime.

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) April 19, 2006 -- Russ Cohn, an MIT-educated scientist and the inventor of NatureMill, the first fully automated composter, stresses the impact each individual can have on the environment. According to Cohn, if each person recycled his food and paper waste, we would eliminate half the world’s trash, reduce methane gases, and significantly improve the global warming problem.

Cohn notes that half of all landfill waste is composed of paper and food products, items that could easily be recycled by individuals.

He says, “Landfills block the oxygen necessary for decomposition. Embalmed for centuries, paper and food waste are mixed with plastic and chemicals, resulting in a toxic mass. Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, is then released into the atmosphere.”

Cohn emphasizes the impact that methane has on the environment, stressing that it has accounted for as much as a third of the global warming since 1750. Cohn notes, “The earth has warmed one degree Fahrenheit over the last hundred years. By contrast, the earth was only seven degrees cooler 18,000 years ago -- and that was during the Ice Age!”

Cohn, who wrote his graduate thesis at MIT on technology policy in the automotive industry, developed his own composter, NatureMill, to address this landfill crisis and the problems associated with greenhouse gas emissions. His machine recycles paper and food scraps, heating them, and then turning them into safe, organic compost within 10 days. “I’d experimented with other forms of composting before but always had problems -- either there were smells, messes, or I had garbage rotting in my yard. And I certainly didn’t want worms in my kitchen!”

Cohn’s composter is the only computerized composter sold in the United States. During the course of its lifetime, it is able to divert over two tons of garbage from landfills. More information on landfills and composting can be found at http://www.naturemill.com.
