Eighty-five works were selected for the exhibition, juried by Marylin Kushner, department chair, prints, drawings, and photographs and curator of prints and drawings at the Brooklyn Museum, New York.

“Landscape 2” is a diptych, comprised of two, square mounted photographs (20” x 20” each), created in November 2005.

For years Michele Guieu has taken photographs of landscapes and of family when she travels. She is particularly interested in close portraits and desert landscapes. Recently, Michele found a way to begin incorporating her collection of photographs into her paintings and digital art.

Michele begins by transforming and compositing multiple photographs using image editing software. Through this technique she produces a simplified image that contains recognizable traits from the source material.

She says: “Since the beginning of my research I have wanted to simplify the photos I take, to eliminate many of the details, keeping only what I find essential. I use very few filters and manipulations. My digital work is not far form my painted work, in the sense that, in both of them, the organization of the space is simple, the human element is essential, and the colors are few.”

Her digital and painted work share a strong sense of unity in character as Michele expresses her ideas on the relationship of human beings to the spaces that surround them through her images.
