QA Labs Introduces a Cost-Effective Outsourcing Model for Encyclopaedia Britannica Software Testing Projects

QA Labs provides all the benefits of near-shore outsourcing at 30% savings.

Encylopaedia Britannica has selected a combined near-shore/offshore outsourcing model offered by QA Labs for all its software testing and quality assurance projects. To provide the best possible software testing at a competitive price, QA Labs will deliver services out of Canada and India. This hybrid outsourcing approach gives Encyclopaedia Britannica access to lower overseas pricing without the logistical challenges of managing offshore outsourcing contracts.

For over a year, QA Labs has tested Encylopaedia Britannica’s CRM software including customer authentication and registration, billing and subscriptions, as well as the software that runs its flagship product, the Ultimate Reference Suite. To secure further Encylopaedia Britannica testing contracts, QA Labs offered the company a combined near-shore/offshore outsourcing model. This approach lowers testing costs more than 30% while reducing problems associated with offshore outsourcing such as time zones, language, cultural differences and proximity.

“There’s no scenario that makes me happier than having QA Labs manage testing projects, some of which will take place in India,” said Terence Boyle, Executive Producer at Encyclopaedia Britannica. “On a day-to-day basis we will work directly with QA Labs in Vancouver, not Bangalore. Using this model, we’ll benefit from lower offshore outsourcing costs, but can continue to work with a company that has a similar business culture and time zone.”

According to a Cutter Consortium report published last year, software testing is an ideal near-shore outsourcing activity, due to easier travel and closer physical proximity. By hiring QA Labs to manage testing, Encyclopaedia Britannica achieves the targeted cost savings from executing some testing offshore, but is not faced with potential communications difficulties associated with offshore development and testing contracts. If transition details get lost in the communication process the cost of outsourcing to an offshore company can rapidly increase, negating the lower hourly price.

“Managing offshore outsourcing contracts can become a headache for IT managers dealing with time zones, language and cultural differences. Still, the appeal of lower development and testing costs are attractive,” said Wolfgang Strigel, President of QA Labs. “This hybrid approach works for QA Labs because we can offer added value and lower costs to our customers and we are not losing work to overseas software testing companies.”
