A Child’s-Eye View of Life in Rural Germany During World War II
In the Shadow of the Mill, by Rosemarie Schulga, paints both a poignant picture of a family affected by war and a young girl’s struggle for a better way of life.
TUCSON, ARIZONA (PRWEB) April 29, 2006 -- Rosemarie Schulga tells the story of growing up in rural Germany during World War II in a large family that has no formal citizenship. Her Russian-born father, taken to Germany as a prisoner of war in World War I, is hired as a farm worker in a peasant village. Rosemarie's family is caught up in the intrigue of World War II when her father is again imprisoned by the Nazis. Bombings, hiding, food shortages, fear and shame take on a whole new meaning when seen through the eyes of a youngster who yearns for freedom from the constraints of peasant village life.
In the Shadow of the Mill is a child’s-eye view of historical facts. It is filled with tales of old-world life; superstitions and traditions; feasts and rituals. Daily struggles for survival are interspersed with the wonder of childhood, as the youngster matures under difficult, and often frightening, circumstances. It is a story of a search for freedom from ignorance and oppression set in a time of radical change in village life that – like the windmill that turned so faithfully near her childhood home – is gone forever.
At three, she saw fire in the sky as the nearby city of Luebeck burned. At fourteen, she was turned out of her home by her parents for refusing to marry a much older farmer. The period of time between those two events is remembered in poignant detail, describing the young girl’s look at the world around her and examining how she tries to make sense of everything from family relationships to ethnic discrimination.
