Lt. Colonel Bob Weinstein, aka the Health Colonel, inspired and motivated our Veterans at the Seventh Annual Tamarac Veterans Assembly as special guest speaker hosted by The Tamarac Veterans Affairs Committee on April 26, 2006 at the Tamarac Community Center in Tamarac, Florida.

Asked why he volunteered his time for the Veterans Assembly event, Col. Weinstein replied, “An event recognizing and honoring our veterans for their sacrifices gave me an opportunity to demonstrate that I care about their contribution and also understand that it is an honor to be a soldier and a warrior protecting our freedoms, our families and our way of life. The commitment and sacrifice of a soldier should never ever be taken for granted. Ongoing conflicts around the world that threaten lives of decent people everywhere are a constant reminder that it is not by chance that we enjoy the freedoms that we have. These freedoms have been paid for with the blood of our soldiers.”

“It felt great to be amongst comrades. After retiring in the year 2000 with 30 years of service I miss the camaraderie of my fellow soldiers the most,” he continues.

Today, Lt. Col. Weinstein is a speaker, writer and beach boot camp instructor on Fort Lauderdale Beach in Florida and has been featured on the History Channel. His calling is to help Americans lead healthy lives. As he says, “There are enemy soldiers on American soil. The names of these soldiers are Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke. They are killing over 3,000 Americans a day.”

Mayor Ben Graber of Broward County, Mayor Beth Flansbaum-Talabisco of the City of Tamarac along with Commissioners Patte Atkins-Grad, Harry Dressler and Marc Sultanof were in attendance and expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the service of our veterans.

The Spruance Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps under the command of Lt. Cdr. Alan Starr posted the Colors as the Color Guard.

The guest speaker and the Sea Cadet Color Guard were introduced to the event by U.S. Naval Academy graduate and former Tamarac resident Brian Kling. Kling helped coordinate some of the logistics of the event, and often volunteers his time to the City of Tamarac's Veterans' Affairs Committee when he is not engaged in his practice as a Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch.

The Tamarac Veterans Affairs Committee is a group of local Veterans that provide volunteer community service to veterans in need. Member organizations include the American Legion Post #265, the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A. Post #519, the AMVETS Post #2, Military Order of the Purple Hearts Chapter #674, Marine Corps League – Tamarac Detachment 755, the DAV Chapter #73 and/or American Ex-POWs Broward/S. Palm Beach Chapter.

Commanders of each post, or their representatives, serve on the Tamarac Veterans Affairs Committee by appointment of the City Commission. The Committee promotes awareness among veterans of their rights and benefits, lends assistance with special needs and works to encourage public awareness of the veterans’ role in the history of the United States.
