The Rensselaer Falls Library Invites Residents to Explore Local History

St. Lawrence County residents are encouraged to explore history through family programs, guest speakers, crafts, and a poster/essay contest.

Rensselaer Falls, NY (PRWEB) April 30, 2006 -- The Rensselaer Falls Library continues to stay true to their motto, “Where People Connect,” by inviting St. Lawrence County residents to explore local history through special family programs, guest speakers, crafts, and a poster/essay contest.

The programs, which are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursdays starting May 9, will focus on St. Lawrence County and significant events that helped to shape American history and culture. These programs are being held in conjunction with the library’s recent book award from the National Endowment for the Humanities We the People Bookshelf initiative, which celebrates Becoming American through 15 classic books. All programs are free and open to the public.

“With Memorial Day fast approaching and immigration being such a hot topic in the media, it seemed only fitting to hold these programs in May, “said Library Branch Manager Nina L. Forrest. “The goal is to educate individuals and families about the great history that surrounds them everyday.”

The library will be hosting the following programs: On Tuesday, May 9, find out about George Boldt, the origin of Thousand Island dressing, and make recipe cards. On Thursday, May 11, learn how the St. Lawrence River, and Ellis Island played a pivotal role with immigration, plus make a family tree. On Tuesday, May 16, a special guest speaker will explain how Frederic Remington depicted American history through his works, plus finish a fictitious Remington drawing. On Thursday, May 18, learn about New York State and its symbols, plus make a culture pizza. On Tuesday, May 23, hear about Rensselaer Falls history and make an all about me book. On Thursday, May 25, a special guest speaker will explain Silas Wright’s role in American history and make flags.

In addition to the six programs, the Rensselaer Falls Library will gear all their regular story time activities toward the Becoming American theme, and will also hold a poster and essay contest for grades K-12. The contest, which is open to kids throughout St. Lawrence County, posses the question “What Does Being American Mean to Me?”

“Everybody has a different take on what being American means,” said Mrs. Forrest. “It will be very exciting to see and read how the children portray that theme and idea in their own work.”

Rules for the contest are as follows: Posters submissions are required for grades K-2, and 3-6. All posters must be on poster board. Essay submissions are required for grades 7-9, and 10-12. Essays should be typed, double spaced, and no more then 250 words. Only one entry allowed per person. Please include name, city or town, telephone number, and grade on the back of the poster or essay. All posters and essays must be turned into the library by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2006.
