Originally created in 1954 by members of the famed Actors Studio, including Shelley Winters, Ben Gazzara, Anthony Franciosa, Frank Corsaro and Michael Gazzo, A Hatful of Rain will grace the stage of the Meta Theater from June 9th through July 16th. The cast and crew respectfully present this play in memory of Anthony Franciosa and Shelley Winters, who were part of the original cast and recently passed away within a month of each other. Opening night is Friday, June 9, 2006 at 8:00 PM. Tickets are available online or by calling 818-509-7200.

Directed by David Blanchard and produced by Amir Khalighi and Stephanie Bergman, this tale is set in the Lower East Side of New York City shortly after the end of the Korean War. The play centers around Johnny Pope, a war hero and former POW, and his struggle to renew his commitment to his family and re-enter civilized American society. The war, however, has changed that society as well as Johnny. And, both must choose between the needs of the past and the promises of an uncertain future. Written more than fifty years ago during a deceptively innocent time in American history, A Hatful of Rain tells a working-class tale of betrayal, addiction, courage, and the power to forgive.

A Hatful of Rain, for which Ben Gazzara won the 1956 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play and Anthony Franciosa won the 1956 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play, is an intimate portrait of a people, a place and a time.

The cast features John-Dylan Howard as Johnny Pope, Shawn G. Smith as Polo Pope, Madden Page as John Pope, Sr., Stephanie Bergman as Celia Pope, Josh T. Ryan as Mother, Matt Laroux as Apples, Mark Belasco as Chuch and Sara Francis Scott as Putskie.

Other members of the artistic team who brought this powerful play to the stage are David Blanchard, Director; Amir Khalighi, Producer; Alexana Thomas, Assistant Producer; Danny Cistone, Set Designer; Davis Campbell, Assistant Set Designer; Camila Indorf, Stage Manager; Kimberly Negrete, Lighting Designer; and Andrew Brown, Light/Sound Operator.

Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 7:00 PM. Opening night/Media night is June 9, 2006 at 8:00 PM. The Meta Theater is located at 7801 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, CA 90046.
