It's Sangria Month at Counter Restaurant: It's Raining Praise on NYC's Counter Restaurant and Organic Wine & Martini Bar -- and the Celebration's Begun

New York's premier vegetarian bistro & wine/martini bar has recently been recognized by the New York Times as the "Epicenter" of vivacious organic cocktailing, and Veg News as Restaurant of the Year. To celebrate, Counter is offering both Sangria-inspired cuisine as well as half off its delicious signature sangria throughout the month of May.

Getting praise is nice, but when it comes from The New York Times...well that's the time to get festive:

According to The New York Times (April 2, 2006), "The ascetic vibe of most vegetarian restaurants doesn't lend itself to vivacious cocktailing, which is why Counter, and its un-self-righteous drinks list, feels so refreshing." Praising the Dirtiest Martini in particular -- one of their many humorously-named cocktails which include "Not Tonight, Dear" and an "Angry Lesbian" -- Counter was dubbed the "epicenter of organic cocktails" in New York.

New York Magazine praised Counter for being "a stylish vegetarian restaurant with artfully presented healthy food, rich desserts and a wine/martini bar."

In its annual "Essential New York" issue (November 2005), local entertainment bible, Time Out New York, gave kudos to the restaurant for being "a step forward for herbivore cuisine." Lauding the "relaxed, modern classiness" of the decor, the range of the menu "from healthy comfort food to innovative fare" and the "impressive selection of organic wines to wash it all down" -- Counter was awarded the coveted top spot as NYC's essential vegetarian restaurant.

The editors of Veg News Magazine awarded Counter Restaurant of the Year for 2005.

The prior year, New York Naturally also annointed Counter Restaurant of the Year for its "seasonal, ever-evolving menu (which) has raised the bar on outstanding vegan cuisine."

"We're so thrilled to keep getting such amazing reviews from critics and customers alike, that we wanted to celebrate and give back, too," explains owner Deborah Gavito. "We're gearing up for a hot and humid New York summer, and sangria is the perfect drink. In addition to our signature sangria, we'll have a frozen sangria, red and white sangria -- as well as sangria-inspired cuisine ranging from sangria soup, to a marmalade, and even an ice cream. Our customers love coming to Counter to relax and enjoy tasty, innovative cuisine...not just good vegetarian food, but great food, period. In fact, over half of our regular customers are carnivores!"
