Belcarra’s USBLAN, a software product that provides for peer-to-peer networking among smart peripherals and to the Windows desktop now includes support for CDC-EEM.

Belcarra Technologies, a leading developer of USB software and network solutions, today announced the addition of the Ethernet Emulation Model (EEM) specification to its USBLAN driver suite.

Belcarra’s USBLAN enables peer-to-peer Internet networking among smart peripherals and to the Windows desktop in the controlled and physically secure USB environment. “Today’s network aware smart peripherals can make unlimited use of the broad capabilities Belcarra’s USBLAN brings to the desktop and USB peripheral scene” said Bruce Balden, Belcarra’s President, “Smart handheld devices readily appear in the Windows Explorer “Network Neighbourhood” and may share files and abilities with each other and the Windows desktop computer.”

USBLAN today adds the new EEM sub-class to the older CDC-ECM (Ethernet Control Model) set out by the USB Implementers Forum, the group that developed the Universal Serial Bus specification. EEM simplifies the design and deployment of Internet-based file, data and printer sharing over USB for smart devices such as PDA’s, MP3 Players, Cellular phones or Personal Data Storage devices. USBLAN allows these personal devices to participate in a peer-to-peer Personal Area Network that includes the Windows PC.

“EEM standardizes and simplifies the flow of Ethernet frames over USB, and Belcarra’s Windows driver adds all of the necessary elements to quickly and easily implement Internet Protocol services through USB,” said Balden. “Belcarra has designed its USBLAN with this objective in mind. Use of the new EEM offers increased throughput and easier implementation, especially with Windows systems.”

OEMs creating new smart peripherals of all kinds will want to include networking functionality to and through the desktop PC via USB. Belcarra’s USBLAN easily and quickly integrates the standards-based solution into their product.
