Galt Associates, Inc., a leading provider of drug safety and risk management solutions, today announced the integration of dsNavigator, its market leading coding and dictionary management solution, with the Problem List Subset of the Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine (SNOMED). This new capability, available to new and existing clients, will provide companies with a quick and efficient mechanism with which to comply with the FDA’s recently announced imminent deadline for coding with SNOMED.

The FDA announced on April 19, 2006 its intention to adopt SNOMED as the standard computerized medical vocabulary system to be used to electronically code important terms in the Highlights section of prescription drug labeling. Specifically, the FDA announced that the Problem List Subset of SNOMED is suitable for electronic coding of certain terms in the Highlight data elements of the new format for prescription drug information, and this format will be required beginning June 30, 2006 for recently approved (within the last 5 years) and newly approved drug products.

Available today, dsNavigator supports this dictionary as a hierarchy structure consisting of two levels: Concept Category, and Concept. The Concept Category level defines the categorization of the concept in SNOMED, e.g., disorder, finding, morphologic abnormality. The Concept level contains the SNOMED concept. The full range of dsNavigator capabilities, including dictionary browse, coding workflow management and approvals, synonym management for consistency, intelligent autocoding using fuzzy search matching logic, and multi-dictionary version management, are available using this SNOMED subset. Looking to the future, the MedDRA “Problem List” mapping, which MSSO recently announced is under development, will also be supported when it becomes available.

“We have had a number of enquiries from our clients about our capacity to support SNOMED” said Y. Renee Lewis, CEO of Galt Associates. “We have converted the SNOMED Problem List for use as a standard dictionary in dsNavigator to support an immediate need for controlled re-coding and on-going management of labeled reaction terms. The addition of SNOMED to our dictionary support list takes Galt an important step down the path towards universal dictionary management.”
