Grounded Air Acquires Headwater’s Freight Logix Transportation Management System to Manage Complex of Four Companies

Grounded Air, Inc. operates as four separate companies, each with different but related functions. Growing and diversifying, the company needed a transportation management solution that was highly funcitonal and could enable interaction with the data of all four entities. Headwater's Freight Logix satisfies all of its requirements.

Grounded Air, Inc. has purchased the Freight Logix transportation management software suite from Headwater Technology Solutions Inc. and will use the system to manage its complex of four interrelated logistics companies, it was announced today by Vice President Nick Ehret and Headwater Vice President Mel Mills. The Fridley-based company expects to be live with the new system by mid-year.

The four companies include Grounded Air, which operates a fleet of 40+ company and owner-operated trucks locally and regionally; GA Logistics, which provides brokered transportation services; J&J Warehousing, which operates a 40,000 square foot facility for short-term storage, transfer and cross docking of freight; and Jet-Way express, which offers expedited less-than-truckload two-day service, currently between Los Angeles and Minneapolis but with plans to expand to other routes as well.

According to Ehret, Freight Logix is replacing a solution that had been in place for about four years, but which compartmentalizes the operations of the several companies and allows for no interoperability. Conversely, he said, Freight Logix will allow all of the company’s operations to work seamlessly in the same software environment, permitting greater efficiency and facilitating growth through the streamlining and reconfiguration of management functions. The solution will reside on a Microsoft Windows server at the company’s Fridley headquarters.

“We considered at least a dozen TMS products of varying capabilities, and after many hours of deliberation and capability, we concluded that Freight Logix was the best fit for our operations,” Ehret said. “It was the only product that handled 100 percent of our requirements with absolutely no need for customization, work-around solutions or having to live without something. I witnessed dozens of complicated scenarios thrown at the demonstrator by my staff and not once did I see even the slightest hesitation in their demonstration of the solution.”

The solution now being implemented is comprised of 10 user seats and its key features include, among others: email integration; integration with financials; web-based tracking and tracing; carrier rating; customer rating; an executive dashboard/control panel; a fuel tax module; an ETA system module; mobile communications module and PC Miler. It also has a driver rating capability that enables dispatch to determine the overall profitability of a load as it is being built by factoring in all of the costs pertaining to the driver and his/her past performance, the tractor and the trailer.

“The key to our selection of Freight Logix was its functionality and ease of use. It not only allows you to configure multiple divisions or companies, but it can automatically handle transactions between them,” Ehret said. “For example, if you sell freight from one division to another, it automatically creates the order in the second division when creating the payable in the first. This represents a huge time-saver when transacting data internally, since we will not have to re-enter the order or copy-and-paste it to the second division.

“All aspects of operations in all of the companies will be fully interchangeable and simultaneously viewable, with no need to back out of one company to enter another. This is critical in an LTL environment, where so many variables can come into play with a single load involving multiple companies.”
