Aging in Place Expert Shares Insights with Caregivers

With most senior citizens “Aging in Place” in their own homes, expert provides insight on making modifications for their comfort and safety. Certified expert, Abbie Sladick emphasizes that modifications should be done to enhance seniors’ physical abilities, not compensate for their inabilities.

San Rafael, CA (PRWEB) May 5, 2006 -- Many caring and thoughtful eldercare providers make modifications to their parents’ homes. Unfortunately, many begin work at the wrong end of the spectrum and make modifications that aren’t as helpful as they might be. In a feature article published this month, Certified Aging in Place Specialist Abbie J.W. Sladick emphasizes that caregivers should make home modifications that play to elderly parents’ strengths, not their weaknesses.

The article, featured throughout the month on Parent Care, the leading website for long distance caregivers, Sladick provides readers with a room-to-room tour highlighting possible enhancements. Because the vast majority of senior citizens will “Age in Place” at home, her recommendations are timely.

Taking a glance around your parents’ kitchen will probably identify some of the appliance placement and storage mistakes that are often made. Is the microwave above waist level? Are heavy skillets and pots stored where bending is required to retrieve them? If you answered yes to either question, you’ve also answered yes to your need for assistance. Sladick advises that placing microwaves and heavy cookware at waist level can reduce burn risks and back injuries. She also offers tips for do-it-yourself projects as well as resources for caregivers seeking professional advice or services.

In addition to being certified as an Aging In Place Specialist by the American Home Builders Association, Sladick is founder and president of two successful Florida firms. Abbie Joan Enterprises, her interior remodeling company, specializes in large-scale renovation projects. For three successive years, the firm has been awarded the coveted Sand Dollar award for excellence. Her other firm, Great Grabz, designs and manufactures decorative grab bars and safety fixtures that combine style and safety.
