The Glaux™ (“little owl”) Awards competition is being inaugurated by a local law firm as an annual competition for the purpose of spurring the best San Diego-created inventions into the marketplace.

WHO CAN APPLY - Individual inventors or groups of inventors working as a team may apply. However, each application must list one inventor residing in San Diego County, California. The competition is open to inventors of all ages and submissions for inventions in all fields are encouraged.

WHAT ARE THE PRIZES - The 2006 Laureate will receive a preliminary patentability search evaluating the novelty of their invention and a provisional U.S. patent application prepared and filed pro bono by TDFoster. The Laureate will also receive a written evaluation of their winning invention and a commercialization strategy report both prepared pro bono by Inavisis, Inc. The value of these professional services is estimated to be approximately $50,000. The Laureate will be invited to an awards ceremony in September 2006 as guest of TDFoster and Inavisis, Inc. At that ceremony they will receive a crystal sculpture and a plaque to commemorate their achievement.

WHEN IS THE APPLICATION DEADLINE - The complete and signed Application must arrive by mail or be hand delivered to the Secretariat of the Glaux Awards by August 31, 2006.

WHY IS THIS COMPETITION IMPORTANT - Innovation has had a positive effect on employment locally and bright and intelligent individuals need to be encouraged in their inventive endeavors. As noted by Carol Salem, MD., director of the urologic cancer unit of the Moores UCSD Cancer Center, "As an academic physician, we are constantly searching for ways to improve medical care. Innovative designs literally drive improvements in the way we deliver medical care, especially in the surgical arena. Advances in patient outcomes and quality of life are dependent on such innovations.” Discoveries in all areas can be expected to drive San Diego’s economy into the future.

HOW IS THE WINNER CHOSEN - Laureate of the TDFoster Glaux Award will be chosen by an independent Selection Committee. The Selection Committee will comprise experts of international renown, representing a range of disciplines.
