Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art Announces Opening of Around the Figure Exhibition - May 19, 2006
Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of their group exhibition,"Around the Figure" on May 19, 2006 with a public reception from 6-9pm at the gallery's Williamsburg, Brooklyn location-293 Grand St. The exhibition featuring paintings, sculpture and photography from 18 artists will run until June 19th during normal gallery hours: Thur-Sun 11:30am-8pm, Mons. 9am-5pm and Tues/ Wed. by app't.

Around the Figure
"Around the Figure" features explorations surrounding the human form in painting, photography and sculpture by local, national and international artists. Eighteen different approaches to the subject will be on view. Participating painters include Sasha Blanton an emerging artist from the Baltimore area, Tamara Kowal- a Brooklyn based artist, Carri Skoczek - a figurative painter who shows in New York, Minneapolis & New Orleans; Tom Snelgrove- an emerging NYC artist, and Bill Talbot- a Sussex England based artist and soon to be member of the prestigious chelsea art club who counts Peter Townsend among his collectors.
Photographers participating in "Around the Figure" include Michel Demanche- 2003 photography winner at the Florence Biennale who counts the Houston Museum and Sheppard Pratt institute among her collectors; Marita Contreras- a Peruvian artist based in Florida; the duo of Yasmina Alaoui and Marco Guerra whose works have shown in NYC, France and Morroco in recent months; Jimmy Serkoch- a printer for Kelton Labs with works in the collection of the City Museum of New York and the Musee Elysee in Switerzland, Wanda Taylor Remington - a maryland based artist and Reiner Weidmann - a german photographer exhibiting in New York and in Cologne.
Sculptures for the exhibition come from : M.C. Carolyn - international stone and bronze sculptor who recently had work acquired by the Lake Tahoe National Park, Alan Binstock - a Washington,D.C,. area glass sculptor, Steven Dobbin- a mixed media sculptor from Maryland, Sy Gresser- former artist in residence at Mount Rushmore who exhibited last year at the National Jewish Museum, Ken Little a mixed media sculptor based in Texas whose collectors include Microsoft and the National Contemporary Art Museum in Hawaii, Marcy Milks- an emerging NYC sculptor/painter, Michael Winger- a Stone sculptor based in Maryland and Homer Yost- the sculptor who restored the freedom sculpture on our nation's capital building.
Each artist included in "Around the Figure" will be presenting 2 or 3 works in the exhibition which runs from May 19- June 19, 2006 at Ch'i located at 293 Grand St, in the Williamsburg area of Brooklyn, NY. Many of these artists will be on hand to meet the public at the reception scheduled for May 19th from 6-9pm. Ch’i directed by Tracy Causey-Jeffery is Brooklyn’s premier art space committed to exhibiting strong, exciting, vibrant contemporary art by living artists: both mid-career and emerging, working in abstract color block paintings, fragmented figurative paintings or sculptures,mixed media sculptures, photography & installations. Committed to this goal, Ch’I , one of the pioneers of the Williamsburg art district in Brooklyn, acquired a permanent location to showcase their artists in 2003.
Ch’i’s mission is to show that contemporary art is an integral part of our culture’s vitality. Artists come from as far a field as Brazil, China, England, Italy, Japan and Korea to exhibit at Ch’i.
As well as its own exhibitions, Ch’i participates anually in the AAF Contemporary Art Fair in New York and Photo NY. Further, director, Tracy Causey-Jeffery attended the 2003 Florence Biennale with gallery artist, Michel Demanche who took 1st place in photography and another Ch’i artist, Joe Mangrum placed 1st in the installation category of the Biennale.
Ch’i has also participated in ArtLA, the AAF London and Art NY. Additionally Ch’i’ artists have been awarded public commissions in Washington D.C., the Federal Court House Baltimore, The Museum of the City of New York, Denver Airport and Lake Tahoe.
Ch’i and its artists have been published in Art World News, NY Arts Magazine, Art Forum, Block Magazine, New York Times, The Village Voice and Art and Antiques among others. Ch’i artists are included in the permanent collections of Kantor Fitzgerald, The Musee Elysse, The Museum of the City of New York, MOMA, the Whitne Musuem, Prince Haik Zaruan of Austria, Exxon Energy, the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Bank of China, the Kohler Company, The New York Public Library, The University of Maryland, Healthlink, Robert Mondavi , the Kimbel Museum, the National Gallery of Australia, Pete Towsend, Champion Paper, Yale Univesity Harvard University and the Klutznick National Jewish Museum among others.
Ch’i director, Tracy Causey-Jeffery received her masters in art history from the University of London after interning at Sotheby’s NYC. She started Ch’i in 1999 after running The Finer Side Galleries in Maryland and Washington, D.C. for 7 years. She continues her dedication to showcasing living contemporary artists’ works at the gallery’s new permanent location.
