Limited Edition Floral Giclee Prints Are Moving, Exciting in New Release

Born and raised in New York City, Patricia Frank had frequent access to its cultural treasures. She was an artist from childhood and studied Interior Design at Pratt Institute and Photography with Minor White at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Ten years as a New York still life photographer for clients such as Sony, Bulova and Sara Lee was followed by ten years of intensive international travel. Ms Frank studied and learned to appreciate art at every level from tribal crafts to the icons of today, but found her great love in the world of flowers, which she both grows and seeks out on her expeditions.

"There is an intimacy similar to portraiture. I find the lush colors and exotic shapes that have evolved for the most basic purpose: attracting a pollinator, to be emotionally exciting. I ‘aim’ these images at a place other than the brain to connect on this emotional level. Classic beauty is often seen as irrelevant by photographers focused on the gritty, hard edges of life. I think beauty can be just as nourishing as food for thought," says Ms Frank.

The computer revolution in the graphic design field resulted in work at American Express, Pfizer and for many freelance clients. Her archival prints use Epson inks and Sommerset Velvet Watercolor paper yielding museum quality art.

Patricia’s floral body of work began in reaction to the end of years of working in a windowless midtown office and the chance to document a season’s flow of flowers through her own garden. This project has expanded to include flowers from area botanical gardens and her travels to England, Asia and Egypt.

Using natural light she captures the growing flower, combining camera and computer to express her reaction to the subject, blending reality and perception. “I use constantly evolving tools and techniques ‘appropriate’ for each flower - guided by shape and color?, my subconscious?, the ‘force’ that funnels through artists?,” she reveals.
