Martial Arts Students Honor Mothers with Mother's Day Pledge

Judo students at Bushikai Martial Arts in Frederick, Maryland present a signed pledge to their mothers promising to work hard at school and help keep their homes a clean and nurturing environment.

Frederick, MD (PRWEB) May 13, 2006 -- Students at Bushikai Martial Arts honored their mothers during the month of May by reciting a Mother’s Day pledge in the presence of their mothers and classmates. Each student then added his or her signed pledge to a display of all students’ Mother’s Day pledges at the school.

Harry Mackenzie, head instructor of Bushikai Martial Arts, said the purpose of this special ceremony was to teach students another one of the many important life lessons they learn in every class.

“That lesson is always to honor your mother, help her with chores and thank her for allowing you to learn from and enjoy the martial arts,” said Mr. Mackenzie. “We also connect this lesson to other lessons about being disciplined and showing respect to others. We’re proud of our well-rounded curriculum that teaches our students more than just how to kick and punch, as important as these lessons are for physical fitness and self-defense.”

According to Mr. Mackenzie, the ceremonial aspect of this event and the recitation of the pledge by each student directly to his or her mother is another important lesson. Children learn the self-confidence to speak in front of an audience and express themselves in genuine and sincere terms.

The Mother’s Day Pledge states: I, _____________________, pledge to my mother that I will always continue my training and learn to be a leader: do my chores and help my family make our home a great place to live; study hard and be the best student possible; and be disciplined and show respect to others. Students and their mothers then sign the pledges.

Andi Grove is a math teacher at Tuscarora High School and mother of three. She has been bringing her children; Emily, age 11, Paige, age 13, and Will, age 15, to Bushikai Martial Arts for three and one half years. “The Bushikai dojo has given me, as a mom, a wonderful sense of security knowing they have learned to defend themselves in such a nurturing environment.”

Bushikai Martial Arts has been serving the greater Frederick community since 1989, and promotes and strives for the highest standards of age-appropriate curriculum, leadership training, child safety and security, business integrity and professional ethics.
