PokerListings.com Donates $10,000 To UNICEF To Help Stop Trafficking Of Albanian Children

As part of a first step initiative aimed at improving the lives and health of individuals and communities across the globe, PokerListings.com (pokerlistings.com/charity), the largest Internet poker guide, has donated $10,000 to UNICEF (unicef.org), one of the foremost children’s aid organizations in the world, to help protect Albanian children from trafficking.

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 21, 2006 – PokerListings.com (http://www.pokerlistings.com/charity) has donated a whopping $10,000 to UNICEF (http://www.unicef.org) to aid in the non-profit organization’s efforts to protect the rights of impoverished children in Albania who are victims of an extensive and illegal child trafficking network.

Many of Albania’s children and adolescents are taken abroad to live and work on the streets as sex workers, forced laborers, and beggars, and, occasionally, are used for the sale of organs. Often, they are sent by their own families as a way to generate much needed income. The human rights violations experienced by these children create a unique situation which calls for immediate action by governments and international aid organizations.

UNICEF has participated in numerous campaigns aimed at rescuing and rehabilitating victims, and has spearheaded several initiatives together with regional governments and non-profit organizations to bring trafficked children back safely to Albania. Working together with international and local organizations, UNICEF is involved in the organization of educational anti-trafficking campaigns, the provision of resources for proper emotional and physical treatment, and the funding of vocational and recreational programs to reintegrate children back into their communities.

“We here at PokerListings.com believe UNICEF’s work helping to protect the children of Albania and South Eastern Europe is one of the most important international aid campaigns taking place in the world today,” said Jenny Säfström, community and public relations coordinator at PokerListings.com. “PokerListings.com shares in their vision that every child deserves a safe, healthy, and carefree childhood, and is proud to be contributing to their effort.”

“The newly launched charitable branch of PokerListings.com seeks to raise awareness within the poker community about human rights abuses, injustices, and communities in need around the world, and hopes to make a difference by giving back to the world and fulfilling our duty as a responsible member of society,” continued Ms. Säfström.
