Quantum Orthopedics, Inc. Presented New Data on its Minimally Invasive Facet System

On Saturday, May 13 at the Spine Arthroplasty Society meeting in Montreal, Carl Lauryssen, MD presented new data regarding Quantum Orthopedics’ Zyre™ Facet System.

Carlsbad, CA (PRWEB) May 25, 2006 -- At the Spine Arthroplasty Society meeting in Montreal, Carl Lauryssen, MD presented new data regarding Quantum Orthopedics’ Zyre™ Facet System. The presentation, titled “Performance and Histology Review of the Zyre Facet Replacement System” detailed static and dynamic testing that was performed in cadavaric spine specimens. The testing illustrated the endurance of the Zyre system under repeated loading. Subsequent histology examination of the specimens revealed no evidence of device wear in or around the anatomic structures where the device was implanted.

According to Dr. Carl Lauryssen, “Over the last year of testing and development, we have learned important performance parameters on the Zyre™ Facet System. The system performs well under load, and may present patients with a long term solution to facet joint pain.” Jason Blain, CTO of Quantum Orthopedics, Inc. said, “The tests were very promising, indicating robust wear and mechanical performance of the device.”

According to surgeon experts, Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) and facet joint arthritis are part of a cascade of degeneration and often occur together. Facet joint arthritis is a contraindication for patients seeking disc replacement surgery. With the recent FDA clearance of several artificial discs, the Zyre system may be the only minimally invasive, tissue sparing solution to give patients and surgeons a full motion preservation option for all of the joints in the spine. The Zyre™ system has the potential to be used as a stand-alone device or in conjunction with total disc or disc nucleus replacement.

The Quantum Zyre™ system consists of a malleable spacer placed between the facet joints secured with a cord. The polymer cord serves to limit over-extension of the facets in a natural elastic manner. The system relies on native facet anatomy and augments the natural function of the facets. Because Zyre does not violate the pedicle, it is a reversible procedure that maintains the option for fusion should the patient’s condition requires further treatment. Zyre is not approved for use in the United States.

Quantum Orthopedics is a medical device company focused on innovative technologies to treat diseases of the spine. Quantum currently markets spinal fusion devices and is introducing new products in the coming months. Quantum Orthopedics was formed in 2003 and is established as a Delaware Corporation located in Carlsbad, CA.
