Ethernet has long been the de facto standard for Layer 2 connectivity up to campus scale: It is simple, fast, well-understood and cheap. These characteristics, coupled with a desire to retain full control over all routes, motivate many network operators to look for Ethernet connectivity across wider areas. Metro Ethernet solutions have been available for more than a decade, but until recently have required proprietary technologies and have been limited to single metro areas. Long-distance Layer 2 connectivity required point-to-point technologies such as frame relay and ATM.
With the widespread deployment of MPLS, Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) has become a standardized technology for offering Ethernet connectivity up to global scale. And inter-provider VPLS eliminates the last boundary to widespread, flexible Ethernet connectivity by allowing VPLS to cross multiple service providers.
