The Horndribbles: Evolutionarily Challenged will feature over forty monster specimens hand-stitched by the creators, Denver-based artists Lucas Richards and Sarah Cassidy. The art pieces represent one-of-a-kind designs, made available for sale before a select few models go into reproduction. “We wanted collectors and the Denver art community to have a chance to view or purchase the very first Horndribble models before they go into production,” says Richards.

Starving Magpie Studios, founded by Richards and Cassidy, has plans to reproduce the toy line after the Fakture Gallery show. The duo has created over 100 unique plush toy species, unified under the concept of ‘Horndribbles,’ a fictional kingdom of biological classification recently added to include monsters. Parodying a natural history exhibit of taxidermy, the collection posits the conceit that the monsters are real specimens through humorous, tongue-in-cheek descriptions by local writer Brett Duesing.

The Horndribble exhibit coincides with growing international trend that blurs the line between art and toys. A phenomenon of ‘scary cute’ aesthetics for adult collectors has its origins in Japan, but also has generated considerable American interest in the past few years. Locally, several specialty stores have opened recently as dealers in this market, including Fakture Gallery’s second location at 125 Broadway. In addition to fine art, the new Fakture store deals in designer toys and fashion offerings.

Fakture curator Lorenzo Dolce and Sara Dolce have committed Fakture gallery space on Santa Fe to three major shows devoted to toy-art. Besides Horndribbles: Evolutionarily Challenged, the gallery will feature childlike art collective of the Yummies with artist Ray Young Chu in June, as well as Dolce’s own collection of Fakture toys, displayed previously.

“Right now there’s tremendous creativity and attention devoted to toys in the art world,” says Dolce. “We at Fakture are excited to show the Horndribbles, a local addition to that, which really has its own unique niche. It’s going to be a very fun, very enjoyable show.”
