The Hip-Hop Therapy Project is Opening its New Office
The Hip-Hop Therapy Project, LLC is expanding and opening its first office in the Historic Halyard Bldg located at 2209 N. Dr. MLK Jr. Drive in the new Bronzeville cultural and entertainment district in Milwaukee, WI.
(PRWEB) May 29, 2006 -- Hip-Hop is often viewed as the "Voice of a Generation". It is a tool that allows those to be seen and heard that might not have been in any other arena or venue. The Hip-Hop Therapy Project recognizes that value of Hip-Hop, as well as its mass appeal and staying power, and reaches out to those who are most affected by Hip-Hop to teach, model, advocate, and demonstrate the "art of healing from the telling and sharing of ones story".
At the core of the project is the therapeutic concept, Hip-Hop Therapy (HHT). HHT is a newly evidence based approach to practice that is described to be innovative and culturally sensitive. The approach is unique because it incorporates traditional therapies, such as music therapy, cognitive and behavioral therapy, relational therapy, and narrative therapy fostered around the inclusion of Hip-Hop music and culture. While utilizing the formats of the traditional approaches, Hip-Hop Therapy introduces and analyzes Hip-Hop music, its lyrics, and culture as it relates to the person in therapy, educational environment, and/or community development. The approach engages participants by analyzing Hip-Hop music, lyrics, and culture, as well as creates discussion and critically analyzes life issues and struggles, while exploring and testing ones reality, self-concept, decision-making skills, attitude, behaviors, and emotional state before the onset of a life issue or struggle.

Nakeyshaey M. Tillie Allen, affectionately known as "The Hip-Hop Therapist ™", founded the project in 2004. Ms. Tillie-Allen is a social therapist and has recognized how in the last 30 years, Hip-Hop music and culture has become a pervasive part of our overall mainstream society. Recognizing Hip-Hop's value, mass appeal, and staying power, mostly known for its connection with Rap Musicians, the Project connects that component of Hip-Hop and its influence amongst everyday people - with everyday life issues and struggles, and engages them to learn how to address those life issues and struggles. It also employs the support of qualified helping professionals who utilize the approach Hip-Hop Therapy with said populations.
Under Ms. Tillie Allen's leadership, the project has facilitated educational and therapeutic groups in schools, group homes, and youth organizations in and around Milwaukee, WI and Chicago, IL. The project is currently expanding its operations and services by interacting and collaborating with Youth, Social Service, Mental Health, and Hip-Hop organizations all over the country, with the most recent efforts taking place in Houston, Texas and Los Angeles, California.
If you are in or around the Milwaukee area, please be sure to stop by and check out The Hip-Hop Therapy Project's the new office.
