Companies Rally Help for Pappas Schools

The private-sector support that traditionally floods into the Valley’s Thomas J. Pappas schools for homeless children is starting to ramp up now that the schools are faced with closure.

New Braunfels, TX (PRWEB) May 31, 2006 -- The local franchise of KidzArt, a provider of art classes for youths, and printing supplier OnPoint Direct announced Friday a partnership to support the schools, which enroll about 800 students at Tempe and Phoenix campuses.

OnPoint Direct has agreed to give ink and toner discounts on a section of its Web site (www.onpointdirect.net/pappas), and donating 10 percent of the proceeds to the Pappas schools.

KidzArt has committed to continue donating classes and supplies to the schools, and it is encouraging other franchise holders to do the same.

The Pappas schools are part of the Maricopa County Regional School District.

The county Board of Supervisors voted Thursday to cut off funding after a county audit reported evidence of overspending on administration, lax oversight and nepotism.

Those were similar to issues cited when the county sheriff’s office investigated the district’s superintendent, Sandra Dowling.

She had reported three months earlier of running a deficit of more than $3.5 million.

Dowling said she hasn’t done anything wrong and will try to keep the Pappas programs open.

Several hundred more students in the county district attend alternative programs and schools in isolated areas.

David Bridger of the Maricopa County Schoolhouse Foundation, the school’s fundraising arm, said Friday that Dowling plans to hold a press conference this week to announce her next move.
