FibroLAN Fiber-optic Networking Technology Deployed by Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority

New System Improves Anti-Terror and Security Monitoring in 70 Stations Supports Voice, Video, Data Transfers Between Stations

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) June 8, 2006 -- FibroLAN, a leading optical networking company that develops integrated fiber-optic broadband access systems for corporate and carrier markets, announced that its solution has been deployed as the fiber- optic backbone for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). The FibroLAN equipment carries heavy-duty video surveillance applications, data transfers and connectivity for the Public Announcement system used in the MTA’s 70 subway and light-rail stations spread throughout the city and its suburbs. The new system improves anti-terror and security monitoring by the MTA.

“FibroLAN was selected as the key component for the MTA’s network backbone because it provided the required redundant 1Gbps high-speed core connectivity for efficient voice, video and data transfers to every MTA station. In addition, FibroLAN’s instantaneous failover mechanism is the quickest available on the market, at less than 20 microseconds, which guarantees a continuous video stream without losing a frame,” said Moshe Vidal, FibroLAN V.P.National Sales. “This makes FibroLAN ideal for surveillance applications in venues like public transportation, power plants, airports, the gaming industry, and other applications where a remote video camera is connected over a redundant fiber link.”

The Los Angeles MTA networking system built on the FibroLAN backbone is fully monitored and controlled from a single Control Center by the MTA’s Communications Engineering team. The new system’s cameras flash a warning in the Control Center if something suspicious is detected in subway stations or in the tunnels.

“Our new upgraded system is a big step forward, and I think the public will feel a lot safer,” Los Angeles MTA board member David Fleming was quoted as saying in a Los Angeles Times story on the new system.

FibroLAN was also chosen last year by the major Australian carrier, Telstra, for a large fiber-to-business deployment, in which Telstra is providing broadband access to schools, banks, government facilities and other large enterprise customers over its fiber-optic network.

The system is based on the MetroStar - FibroLAN’s flagship product that was built specifically for carriers that are deploying Metro Ethernet networks. In such installations, FibroLAN provides end-to-end management capabilities featuring rate limiting, remote loopback, and other features that are critical to carriers in such deployments. The system enables up to 1,500 broadband subscribers dispersed over metropolitan areas to be managed under one IP address and provides access to both intranets and the Internet at speeds ranging from 256K to 1000 Mbps.

FibroLAN teamed up with Siemens Communications Australia to ensure smooth implementation of this strategic long term project.

The FibroLAN solution is also deployed in Disaster Recovery applications, where the protected sites are connected with the FibroLAN units in order to guarantee immediate restoration of network connections.
