To simplify the work of lawyers working with Latin America, a group of U.S. and Latin American lawyers has launched the Website LatinLaws.com, which provides direct access to the full text of laws, decrees, codes, treaties, investment and commercial guides for 20 Latin American countries. It also contains specialized legislation in the areas of foreign investment, mining, natural resources, telecommunications, arbitration and environmental law, in addition to a regional section with conventions, treaties and reports. The site is free and easy to use, and is generating a lot of momentum while gaining substantial credibility and respect throughout the region for its innovation and reliability.
“This is not just another Web directory of legal resources” comments Sandra Orihuela, the dual licensed U.S./Peru corporate attorney who conceptualized the initial idea and is currently spearheading its direction. “LatinLaws provides the full text of the most important legislation and legal resources for twenty countries in Latin America and for the region as a whole, something not yet found in other Internet based resources.”
With a population of over 554 million and foreign direct investment at record levels, Latin America remains an important and attractive market. Globalization and foreign direct investment continues to place new demands and requirements on its legal work force. Regional and bilateral trade agreements are also adding to the internationalization of the region. More importantly, Latin America is also becoming increasingly dependent on Web based technology, with Internet use for the period 2000-2005 showing remarkable growth at 342.5%. Just like the rest of the world, the population of Latin America is benefiting from using the Internet for work and play. Lawyers working in and with Latin America are well aware of these trends. They welcome resources which are tailored to simplify their work and use their time in a cost efficient and productive manner. After all, billable hours are also used to rate their performance.
LatinLaws.com has been created for lawyers by lawyers. Its operations, management and business strategy has already placed it well on its way of becoming Latin America’s leading legal resource.
