(PRWEB) June 10, 2006 -- 20 Women For Darfur, a coalition of twenty women from various facets of the entertainment and legal field, will host an evening on June 8th that will launch their organization and serve as a precursor to a fundraiser in September, boasting a guest list of over 5,000 Californians including various celebrities. The June 8th event will feature a speech given by a Sudanese Refugee at 7:30 p.m., a screening of the film, “Darfur Destroyed” at 8 p.m. and a screening of the film, “21st Century Genocide” at 10 p.m..

“We wanted to do something to engage and motivate people to participate in the struggle to end the genocide in Darfur,” according to Lia Martin, Chairperson of 20 Women For Darfur. Since February 2003, there have been approximately 300,000 deaths and 2 million displaced. “This is not an African crisis but a human crisis,” says Martin. And the next few months will be a crucial time for relief efforts. According to a recent article in the New York Times, “there is still an overall shortage of $389 million for Darfur.”

The guest list for the event includes local celebrities, young professionals and students who are concerned about the crisis in Darfur. After a 6:00 p.m. mixer, the film will be screened on the outside patio of The Red Buddha Lounge. There will also be materials available for guests to read as well as pre-printed postcards for them to forward to their state representatives. All of the proceeds will go to Doctors Without Borders and the International Rescue Committee- the organization George Clooney visited while filming his documentary on refugee camps in Darfur.

The organization is expecting over 400 attendees.
