M & R Bar-Dining Room Formally of Nolita Reopens
The place that was the first in the new wave on Elizabeth Street ten years ago comes back to life on the Bowery. The M & R loyalists have asked for it back and now the time is right. This cellar wine and spirits bar and restaurant will return in June in a unique and comfortable setting.

Formally on Elizabeth Street, M & R actually was the first restaurant-bar there, is being reborn on the hot new Bowery. The original M & R lost its lease a couple of years ago and Michael Howett & Richard Bach, the owners, felt it was time to bring it back. Many of the fun and quirky artifacts are coming out of storage including the art school nudes and the antique liquor and wine display bottles.
After so many former patrons asked when M & R is coming back, Michael and Richard decided that they couldn’t resist any longer and would reopen it again in an interesting cellar space in Noho in Manhattan on June 8th. They also decided that they would not try to duplicate the old M & R, feeling the times are different and New York had changed. Though there are many elements of the original blended in with the new M & R. The new space has a bit of a speak easy flavor that is reached by descending down a flight of stairs from the street into a cellar. Wine, whiskey and a selection of small and main course dishes from an eclectic mix of cuisines is the order of the day.
The room has a dark wood finish, plank tables and a bit of wrought iron. It is a place where one can order from an extensive wine by the glass list and a wide selection of spirits while spying platters of cheese, salads and meats displayed on the bar. A cul de sac to discover small dishes of seafood, vegetables and meats along with nightly specials of larger dishes that will be served until late in the night. The place known for great music, a casually knowledgeable staff, wonderful food and a wide selection of wine and spirits returns to life in June.
M & R is the creation and re-creation of the owners of Marion’s Continental Restaurant & Lounge on the Bowery.
