An ex-radio jock and former Clear Channel employee is campaigning for a star on Hollywood’s “Walk Of Fame.” Not for himself, but for America’s most famous radio jock, “Howard Stern. Former “Mad Radio Show” host Wayne Perry credits Howard Stern with his recent success outside the radio business, and now Perry has committed a percentage of his company’s resources to obtaining a star for Stern on Hollywood’s Walk Of Fame.
“Howard Stern is radio’s greatest pioneer. Anyone who disputes that fact is either misinformed, or they just refuse to accept the truth. As a young man, I based my TV and radio career on what I learned from listening to Howard. He’s like the Lenny Bruce of radio, but far more honest. Obviously my media career fizzled, but Howard’s influence actually helped the business I have today. Honesty is the key and that’s why Howard is such a star. Today we follow his honest approach to doing business,” says Perry.
Perry, known as the “Mad Minute” commentary guy on a New York television station owned by Clear Channel Communications, was fired after spouting off on the 10 O’Clock News condemning the newly elected George Bush. Afterward, Perry landed his own radio show on Albany’s FM Talker 93.7, but within two years he was forced off the air by a format change to country (much like Stern’s early experience in Detroit).
When Stern was removed from Clear Channel radio stations in 2004, Perry called the show to spout off about his own experience and disgust with the radio giant. During that segment, Stern allowed Perry to plug his new product to more than 20 million listeners. Within 24 hours, Perry’s company sold more than 30 thousand dollars worth of Sinus Buster, the world’s first hot pepper nasal spray now sold in more than one thousand stores.
“Howard asked me what I was doing now that I had been blackballed from radio. I told him about Sinus Buster and his fans came out in droves. Stern really helped launch our company and now we’re going to launch his star,” adds Perry.
Perry’s company, SiCap Industries has started a national campaign to get Howard Stern a star on the “Walk Of Fame”. SiCap has committed a percentage of this year’s Sinus Buster sales to obtain Stern’s star.
“We’re committing 25 thousand dollars to this project. Next June we’ll officially nominate Howard Stern for his rightful star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and we’re looking for solid support from the millions of fans who follow him,” says Perry.
According to Wayne Perry, Stern has broken new ground in radio not once, but two times and therefore he is the only radio star to do so. When Stern began his meteoric climb to success in the early 1980s, he pioneered an entire industry.
Before Stern, “Edgy Radio” meant stupid characters trying to be funny without offending the audience. After Stern, radio changed forever with a new brand of honesty and wit. Whether you call it “Shock Jock Radio” or “Morning Radio,” Stern was the true pioneer of this format.
With his jump to Satellite Radio earlier this year, Stern has once again broken new ground. While his show was considered honest and controversial on terrestrial radio, his new venture is “Radio Art” at its’ best. Thanks to Howard Stern, a new medium of radio has been launched -- Satellite.
“Sirius made a brilliant business move by landing Stern. Thanks to him, the entire medium has been elevated beyond anyone’s expectations. Now he’s a pioneer of two radio mediums. That’s a first and he deserves a star on the Walk Of Fame,” Perry proclaims.
Although Stern (billed as the King Of All Media) has been successful in television, film and print, there are only five categories of stars allowed on the official “Hollywood Walk Of Fame”. Each star consists of a poured terrazzo square encompassing a pink “five-pointed” star outlined with bronze. Inside the star is the bronzed name of the honoree, and below the name is a round bronze emblem indicating the category of the star.
The emblems are as follows:
· Motion Picture Camera for contribution to the film industry.
· Television Set for contribution to the broadcast television industry.
· Phonograph Record for contribution to the recording industry.
· Radio Microphone for contribution to the broadcast radio industry.
· Twin Comedy/Tragedy Masks for contribution to live theater.
Nominations are submitted annually by May 31 of each year, and the “Walk Of Fame” committee meets every June to pick the next year's group of honorees. The star ceremonies are open to the public.
According to Wayne Perry, the accepted stars are based on political and personal decisions of committee members, but he believes a strong media campaign for Stern will ultimately prove successful.
“It costs 15 grand to get a star on the Walk Of Fame, and we’re committed to paying that price, but it’ll take a lot more cash to make it all happen. According to inside sources, the majority of the committee is against Stern. I believe that’s because they’re either prudes or they’re scared. Most of them know in their hearts that he deserves it. So we figure an extra 10 or 20 grand will do to publicize the nomination and force the powers that be to do what’s right,” adds Perry.
SiCap has established a special escrow account specifically for the “Howard Stern Walk Of Fame Project”. A percentage of every sale on their website will go toward the Howard Stern Walk Of Fame Project.
“This is no joke. Our company is committed to getting a star for Howard Stern. For Christ’s sake, if Larry King can have a star under the radio emblem, then Howard Stern should have three of them. SiCap is committed to satellite radio and we’re committed to Howard Stern. We just hope he’ll show up for the ceremony,” jokes Perry.
