He Gave His Life, They Took His Head, But Now John The Baptist’s Hand Is In Russia
“John the Baptist was a man of impassioned beliefs and reputation. Among the Russian people his hand, a holy relic, has significant and historical meaning. For Christians of the 21st century, it’s his message, his ministry and his Lord that is life changing and has sustaining importance.” This is how Dr. Charles Lyons, author and counselor reflected on the report of the return of the hand of John the Baptist to Russia after 89 years this past week.
Houston, TX (PRWEB) June 13, 2006 -- Charles Lyons, Ph.D., author, counselor and speaker, in response to the announcement that the hand of the Biblical, John the Baptist, was being returned to Russia explained that this represents more of an opportunity than a miracle moment in time.
The reported hand of John the Baptist historically was taken by the Apostle Luke from the village where it was originally buried. When Napoleon’s armies were advancing the relic was given to the Royal family in St. Petersburg for protection. Later when the Bolshevik revolution began the hand was removed and taken to central Europe for safety.
After 89 years the hand has been returned where it will be taken on a tour through Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine. This event is recognized by the Russian Orthodox Church with reverence. Dr. Lyons points out that the return is meaningful both religiously and has socio-political implications.
Dr. Lyons stated Friday that, “Just as with the living John the Baptist, his message affected changes from the inside out regardless of class placement. Rich and poor, young and old need a life change. That change comes from inside the heart and it is that inward change that can be seen in the daily living of that person.” Dr. Lyons continued to say that the presence of the relic can serve as a catalyst for change in the people of Russia.
While he did not apply any special power or religious energy to the hand Dr. Lyons indicated that changes would come. “The energy we saw in the historical John the Baptist stemmed from his commitment and calling from God on his life. It was the redeeming power of Christ the Messiah that changed lives when people trusted in Christ not John.”
John’s life stirred up people wherever he went. A man or woman of character who does not compromise the truth of the Bible in their daily walk cannot help but to affect change. When the people of Russia and for that matter anywhere in the world return to this basis of truth, the Word of God, change is going to happen, according to Dr. Lyons.
During John’s life he preached a message of repentance and complete change. He baptized people, including Jesus Christ, and his ministry drew enormous crowds. Ultimately because of his stand against the immoral and treacherous life of the Roman leader, Herod, John was beheaded making him the first Christian martyr.
Dr. Lyons is the author of two books, “Daniel a Commentary of Prophecy,” and “Losing Your Head Without Losing Your Mind!” The second book chronicles the life of John the Baptist, the historical Bible character who stood up boldly when wrong was portrayed as right. Dr. Lyons holds degrees in both religion and psychology and has previously worked in law enforcement, the Federal Government and most recently on staff at one of the largest churches in America. He also speaks to groups of various sizes and ethnic backgrounds.
