FirstSTREET, a Top 300 Internet Retailer and catalog company, has announced the launch of a new consumer category on its website (http://www.firststreetonline.com). Seeking to capitalize on the growing nostalgia of all things “retro,” firstSTREET has added Retro Gifts to its current offerings – while staying true to its roots as an innovative retailer of unique, practical gadgets.
According to firstSTREET’s Manager of Internet Marketing, Daniel Yonts, “Retro is definitely in, especially with our customers. Retro, for our customers, doesn’t mean another word for ‘antique’ or ‘antiquated technology’. In fact, the retro products that do well for us tend to be those that employ the latest technology. What all of our Retro products have in common is that they represent the style and the sentiment of era’s that still have meaning and value to us and our customers. Sure, the technology we have today is great. But the style of the 30’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s carries with it memories and emotion and connectedness with the past.”
This perspective is echoed by Bud Myers, firstSTREET’s Senior Director of Merchandising. “The obvious emotional attachment that retro products generate is the tip of the iceberg. What really drives this business is that consumers want something other than ‘silver and slick’ to place in their homes. Moreover, retro products are simple to operate with only the essential controls and features offered. Today’s electronic manufacturers have totally missed the point. Boomers don’t want, don’t care, and won’t buy cluttered, complicated solutions. In over thirty years in the industry, I have never seen such a disconnect between the American consumer and the industry. Retro overcomes those objections.”
Products initially featured in firstSTREET’s new category include a retro styled Jukebox that plays CD’s and MPs, retro clocks, phones and games. These products are sure to be of great interest to boomer males and would make a great gift for father's day. firstSTREET also plans to aggressively expand the number of offerings in this category over the next few months.
